AHHH! damn 440 PISSED ME OFF TODAY! heres the deal, me and my friend loaded up in my truck with my 440 and his KFX, we get to the track and while mine wouldn't start he rides his around and when he rides it back towards me he pops a wheelie and when he brings the front end down the handlebar snaps, so we decide to just ride mine and I was like "ok". The spark plug was fouled in mine so I took it out and wiped it clean, dipped it in some gas and put it back in the thing, after about 10 minutes of hard riding the spark plug fouls  WHY IS THIS!? I already went through 10 spark plugs in 2 weeks!

stock muffler with the baffle sawed out, no airbox lid, 138DJ for the main, bored to a 440cc, and my stupid arse stepdad installed the pilot and he wouldn't tell me what size for some retarded arse reason so I can't tell ya that :huh elevation under 3000 feet, and 40 degrees outside.

No lid and a 138 main on a 440 bore????????:huh

That doesn't sound like it would get enough fuel to start let alone run.

When i pull the plug out it's smut black so I know its getting TOO much fuel... so what Main jet then, I bought the kit so i have many sizes. a 155?

I tried a 170 on the first go around and it was boggin like crazy, so I kept going down and down until im at a 138 :blah:

You said you're using Dyno jet jets correct? Reason I'm asking is that keihn (oem honda jets) are labeled different. My 300ex runs a 132 keihn. 400ex's usually run around 155 keihn. Keep going down sizes until it runs right. Check your filter and make sure it is clean.

i would take that carb off and see what pilot is in there and where the position on the needle is located. i would imagine you would want to go up on the main a few sizes. i personally wouldn't go to a 170, but that is my opinion.

You're gonna have to play with it for your altitude ,I've believe I finally got mine dialed in and you'll know it ,it's like whole new motor under you:D

Im gonna work on it tomorrow but here is a few things.. there is no plastic washer thing that goes around the MJ for some reason and could it be possible that its getting too much gas down low (1/8th - 3/4th) throttle and not enough at the main? my plug is mainly black when I pull it out with 2 little white spots around the top of the threads.

cals400ex
02-11-2004, 09:30 PM
i would probally get one of those plastic pieces.

when do you normally pull the plug? after foulingit ? after a full throttle run? after trying to start it and it won't fire?

Raptor4439
02-12-2004, 02:37 PM
i pull it when it would stop cranking, im about to go outside and give it a try right now and see what happens, i'll post the results in a few.

ok took it for a good hard ride for about 10 minutes after it got warmed up, rolled it in and pulled the plug, it was black on the outside part but the core thing on the inside was a light fade of black, almost white so I think its almost there, Cal, what do you think?

i am having a tough time figuring out how the plug really looks. the whole black but white is confusing me. it would be nice if you could post a pic.

also, when are you pulling the plug?? after just cruising around or are you shutting it off at a full throttle run?

im just takin the thing out and ridin the chit out of it for about 10 minutes and then I check the plug, I can't really get past 4th gear because of my yard size but I do what I can. after about the third ride the whole top of the plug started getting black so im still rich at a 138 DJ :huh

i have a feeling your not rich on your mainjet. if your rich its probally on the clip location or the pilot jet. i assume your using dynojets? where is the clip located and is the washer under the needle? what size pilot jet?

Raptor4439
02-13-2004, 03:20 PM
ah I just yanked the carb out of the ex, im lookin up tutorials on how to take the pilot jet and stuff out. I was thinking the same thing about the needle. im about to lower the clip and see what happens.

cals400ex
02-13-2004, 06:44 PM
hold on, lowering the clip will actually raise the needle making the mixture between 1/8 and 3/4 throttle richer (plug more black). what pilot you running and where is the clip set at? i assume you use a dynojet needle? is the washer under the needle or not?

DJ 138, 3rd clip position with washer, stock pilot jet, and im about to adjust the valves on it because I think my stepdad set the clearences too loose. I put a 155 DJ in there and im goin to run a plug chop to see if its the jettin or the valves.

if you are putting in a new plug every time you check the jetting chances are that ten minutes isnt gonna be enough time to get an accurate reading

Raptor4439
02-14-2004, 08:36 PM
I think I finally have my jetting tuned in, I put a 134DJ in there with the airbox lid on and it runs pretty good when I first hopped on it. the ride was good, I went uphill with a steady gas applied (around 3/4-WOT) and it didn't chop a lick. When I got back in I pulled the plug and the top was a tan brown. :D so im happy, very happy.

I would take your carb out and deep clean it. get a can of carb cleaner and blow it through everything, shoot all the small holes. The same happened to me too. You should be running alot higher than that. I'm running the 170DJ in mine and I just got a 400 with the norm mods.

do you have a pipe on yours?

thats why yours is so high, I have the stock pipe on mine

I just remembered, I took it for a test run the other night and it rode good with the airbox lid on, after about 10 minutes it started to chop a little going up the hill. I took the airbox lid off and when I hit the gas i was like "wow!" it made a big differnece with the throttle response, the chopping was gone and it was more responsive than ever, I checked the plug after the 30 minute ride and it was dark brown on the top and black around the bottom but not smut black, I guess it got black before I took the airbox lid off

so what did you end up with?

Raptor4439
02-18-2004, 05:29 PM
134DJ, open air box lid, stock pilot, and 2nd position on the dynojet needle. The reason my main is so low is because I have the stock exhaust on my 440.

mustang93
02-18-2004, 06:21 PM
whats your altitude, even with the stock pipe that seems small?

cals400ex
02-18-2004, 07:06 PM
yeah that seems low. i was thinking that the stock mainjet in a 400ex is equivalent to a 146 dynojet.

Raptor4439
02-19-2004, 05:07 AM
dunno man but that's what I ended up with. the spark plug is a good grey on the top and I don't want to change it because it's running awesome.
