How many tanks are you guys running thru your bikes before you change the oil?

im chaning my oil as soon as i get by the dealership and pick up some. i got everything else i needed the day i got it but forgot the oil. ive used maybe 1/2 - 3/4 a tank in it but i rode it pretty hard at the track sunday.

I changed the oil after the first 1/2 hour, tranny and engine. I will change it again after I can get a good ride in[too much snow at this point]. The reason I did is because I did not want the filings and such from the assy. process floating around in there any longer than that. By the way there was some on the filter.

agreed, saw some junk on my filter too.

i changed both oils & filter after i went thru a little more than a tankful. i was going to change just the engine oil, but my dealer way overfilled the tranny, so i wanted to empty it and refill it properly. plus the new oil cant hurt.

i took it easy (followed break in procedures) for less than half the tank, and then opened her up for the rest of the tankful. Still havent hit the rev limiter yet. With the new oils in there, I will be running her much harder this weekend. The cool thing about breaking a new quad in in the snow, is its easy to vary RPMs when your sliding around in the white stuff. I've broken in my last 3 brand new quads (all Hondas ;) ) this way.

oil and filter now good for 2 more tankfuls (100miles) and tranny all set for like 600miles...if i remember the maintenance schedule properly.

Right on.

Report back on how your oil and filter looked...

Oh and while you're changing the oil....LOCKTITE and TORQUE the exhaust heat shield bolts before you lose them! Fair warning!

The TRX450R oil filter is the same as the CRF450R oil filter...it's TINY!

And it costs about $10!!!

I'm just curious as to what kind of oil to use. Do you recomend going to synthetic because I know some people that use that or should I stick with regular oil?

I'm using Honda's Pro Semi-synthetic in the motor, and Honda's Pro Tranny-specific oil in the tranny/clutch. Eventually I'll probably switch to fully synthetic in the motor, once the engine has seen a few more oil changes.
