TRX450R front shock design

What's up with the threaded part of the front shock on the TRX450R? It looks like it's removeable or something. Does anyone know why it was designed this way?

Also... the shock body appears to be chromed, which I suspect lends itself to be used with an aftermarket self-sagging-device for zero-preload. Any comments?

took them to santo dersi last nite he soften up the compression and rebound stacks. he has a 450r up there and will be testing different dual rate setups in the next couple of weeks
