Is there a preference for engine over-size based on intended use? I mean, are 440s generally XC bikes, while 416s are MX, etc??

I'm assuming the extra cubes are all gained by a bigger bore/piston, so there wouldn't be a major torque difference as if 1 was a stroker...but is a certain "big bore" 400+ engine considered "the one to have"? Thanks!

They all have their strengths. a 416 is a really quick revving motor. The 440 will give you a lot of bottom end torque. I have a 425, and it is a bit of both. i like the 425. Its all opinion though

Here is what I have experienced, I have a mild 440. IMS kit with a 10.5:1 compression because I did not want to run race gas. Along with that a WB track cam. This worked really well for what I was doing at the time. Then power hunger struck, I went with a FDO 463 stroker kit. :D I was really happy with that, but it was big $$'s to do it. When I went to sell my beloved Honda I could not sell it with the stroker, nobody wanted it. I sold the crank and piston out of it. From there I had detuned it to a 426. I had a high compression piston I had milled down to 10.75:1, approximently. That thing really ripped. If I was to do it again that is what I would do. Cheaper and more reliable. Not to say a good 440 will have more, but I thought it was more bang for the buck.
Good luck....:)
