i have an 04 400ex. it wont start, it has gas and it has spark. i also tried spraying starting fluid in the cylinder and on the spark plug. still nothin. so my friend pulled me with my quad to try to get it to start, still nothing. after i stopped, the exhaust tubes felt slightly warm. i dont know if it makes a difference. anything will help out thanx.

oh yeak, for all you smart asses out there. the kill switch was in the run position and the gas was turned on:p

Sounds like a lack of compression.
Maybe a valve stuck open??

is checking the valves fairly easy?

sounds stupid but have you changed the plug. My 400ex every now and then would not start, change the plug and it would fire right up.

Is your choke on? How is your airfilter? Have you compression tested your motor?

if your plug is really wet and black its probably flooded-happened to me too

Spray starting fluid in the carb not down the cylinder. Just be carefull and not spray alot cause you will lock it up.

I just had the same problem your talking about. I had spark and everything. I tryed everything cdi, checked timing, checked carb for fuel, fuses, etc. It ended up being my coil even though it still had spark. I just tried trail and error with parts from a friends quad. Good Luck

its a new plug and i tried starting fluid like i said before, but i didnt check compression. i did check the fuse and it has a strong blue spark. right before it stopped running it run out of gas and when i tried to start it, it backfired. i filled it up and now it wont start. so i have no idea. ill try a new plug again but im dunced

Sounds dumb but it might be ur spark plug mine did the same thing and i got my friend to pull me and it still didnt do sheout so u might want to try a new plug.

It could be a valve stuck open or broken / slipped timing chain or other timing component.

well i was gonna say check the little bowl on the bottom of the petcock. maybe there was something in ur tank, and since it ran out, it could have sucked it into there and plugged it up. or even in the carb, maybe plugged the float valve or something in the bowl. was the plug wet at all after tryin to start it? if not i would bet its a fuel problem. well, let us know what it was when u get it back.

if it was a fuel prob it would of fired over on the starting fuel. you never said wether it fired or tried to start. did it?

come to think about it, i was runnig fine and all, then all of a sudden it started backfiring like it was runnig out of gas. so i filled it up and now it won't start anymore. so most likely might be a fuel problem. but when i try to start it, i smell a lot of gas like it's flooded. i used starting fluid but still would fire once.

UPDATE!!! i just found out from the dealer that it was the ignition advance key. it just snap in half and i cause it to advance hella and started backfiring. so that was it :)
