Has anybody ridden a 520 KTM quad? I am just wondering how they run compared to a built CRF or YZF? If anyone has done a conversion like that I would be interested if they have any major motor fit, fabrication, or reliability problems with the KTM motor. Thanks.

There was a video posted not long ago about how some guy put a KTM 520 engine in a 250R frame. The quad was doing 65mph over whoops and bumps and looked like it had alot more left in it, the thing was real nice, I can't remember the name of the thread though with the video in it, sorry.:(

Check out the current Dirt Wheels there's a NICE pic of Amanda Slaton's TT racer it's got a KTM 525EXC motor in it & sounds like it ROCKS!!! I'd like to get my hands on a DTM motor & stick it in our 250r frame :blah: but think we're goin w/ the XR600!

When I was down at the quad olymics, mike walsh haded his ktm. That thing killed all of us off the line, that was full of yfz" and crf's. The only problem I can see with using this engine is that it seems like it may be taller and would make the quad have a higher center of gravity thana yfz, crf.

Hi, it won't fit in a EX frame. and Amanda put hers in front of the swingarm pivot, so it is only functional for TT.
I bought a lonestar chassis for mine, works great, I have a 450 and it pulls like a tractor. Don't buy any 03, 02 or 04 are most trouble free.

Yeah that was Daryl Rath's KTM520 Quad..I seen him dinkin around with it at Little Falls once or twice in MN where I attend races quite frequently..that thing is one sick quad, fast as hell too from what I could tell..my quad wasnt together at the time to race it but from a bystander's point of veiw, I would love to ride it or own it. If you are capable of doing the transplant and doing it right I would highly suggest it..Later

I have a KTM chassis (custom JB racing) with the motor bolted up right now. I could finish it, but still waiting on a rear shock. I have also a 400ex chassis with a KTM motor going into in right now. I have seen one of these already and it looked good.

here is a picture of a stock 400ex frame with a KTM 520 engine installed. It's on it's way to the powdercoater now. Look for future pictures of it finished.

Very Nice. Haydug did you do the conversion? It also looks like the upper left framerail was replaced. Can the top end be taken off in the ex conversion without taking the motor out of the chassis?

fraimrale is removable, and topend should be able to come off. Now the frame is off to the powdercoater for a nice trans blue color. This chassis is actually headed to GA for a customer, so he will be finishing the bike.

What do you charge to put that in an ex chassis and do you know where the best place to get the motor would be and about how much do they cost

I can find you some motors, depends on which you want 4-speed or 5-speed. Expect to have around $2500-$3500 in everything to make it run. I bought a used bike and parted it out, however the KTM doesn't part out near as well as a Honda or Yamaha, so don't expect much out of the parts.

Which is better for the quad chassis? Can't you get them with electric start?

haydug

I used an mxc motor, close ratio 5-speed and electric start. This should be the berries.

Those motors make over 50hp stock don't they?

I am seriously considering doing the 520/ex conv. If you come across a good deal on a motor or whole bike could you send me a pm? Thanks.
