both are going to be almost the same for mods.
probably go with the 400, lil more power.

I would have to say get the 400ex, I had a 300ex and had a hard time giving it up because I like the reverse feature but I am glad that I got talked into getting the 400 I don't regret that decision at all plus you can find some pretty cheap 400ex's now.

KOG, If you are an adult or older teen, I would most likely suggest a 400. It has much more potential for growth in riding and power than the 300. In my opinion, if you are still in your low teens, or less, the 300 is the best alternative. The reverse is pretty nice if you are unable to pick up the front or rear of the quad and spin it around. Of course I am speaking about riding in the woods where you may have no choice to pick up a quad and move it around if you don't have reverse. In the open areas, reverse is less important.

I went back and re-read your post... what is cheaper? They are essentially the same.... except that they are making fewer parts for the 300 today.

I have both. And I would say go for the 400.After riding on the 400 and then getting on the 300 you will be like common baby let's go!The 400 has way better suspension and has held up great so far.My 300ex on the other hand I have had to replace shocks and swingarms.I rode that 300 like it was a race 250r though.

I don't like the 300ex plastic whatsoever.I don't like the handlebar setup with the plastic cover.I don't like the headlight setup.A minor roll over will crack the cover and bend the whole assemebly.I went through 2 pairs of front shocks before going to works. What I do like about the 300 is the motor and transmission. It has been dead reliable since we bought it new.It has always started and never had any transmission problems. The chassis is pretty tough.I wouldn't expect any stock swingarm to live through what I did to it.The front shocks are a problem though.Ask anyone that has riden there 300 really hard. And you will find alot of broken front shocks.

As far as mods I am not to sure. The way I look at it is why hop up a turtle.Sure you can put a bunch of money into. And have a pretty fast turtle. It's still a turtle though.

As far as the 400.I have loved mine so far.Very reliable.Good power.Sure it's not the fastest bike out.So far mine has responded pretty well. And when I get my slip on hopefully it will be even better.(It's ordered I am just waiting for it)The suspension is great for just about anything you will find on anything but a MX track.Even though there a blast on those to.

cool 300ex

Go with the 400ex the mods are about the same price for each. You will make the 400ex faster for less money than the 300ex. If you have a 300ex with a pipe,k&n,and jetkit it won't hang with a 400ex. So see wahat i mean about going eith the 400ex you would be ahead of the game.

400ex! 1. going to be hella faster stock. 2. Might be a little more expensive to mod but not to bad. 3. It will take major engine work and supension mods with the 300 just to hang with a stock 400! 4. Just go get a 400!:blah:

after talking with Hetricks about beefing up my 300ex when I had it ,it was WAAAAYYY better to mod up a 400ex, you would pour a TON of $$$ in a 300ex and still fall short.......

You have to spend alot of money on a 300ex to make it close to a stock 400ex. Not just in speed and power, but also in suspension. So it would be cheaper to get a 400ex and do nothing to it, then to get a 300ex and have to mod it.
