I was going to buy a drum of VP C14 fuel and I was wondering how long do you think it would stay fresh? Thanks.

I am talking about a 55 gal drum. Do you use a 55 gal drum every 2 months?

Email VP Racing Fuels, they always get back to me within a day or two.

I bought a 55 gal drum and it lasts me all season of practices and races. I run it straight, no mix. It cost me $360 for 55 gal.

It should keep for a long time. We've had drums last more than a full season and had no problems with pinging (the race car runs 15:1 compression).
I used to use VP but switched to Unocal 110 because VP jacked their prices up to like $360 a drum and I can get Unocal for $220.

If you are running a 2 stroke I wouldn't recommend C-14. I found out the hard way that the specific gravity of C-14 is like .73, and you need .75 or higher for it to mix with premix oil (so basically the oil separates and sits on the bottom of your jug/float bowl, etc.). C-12 is ok, i'm not sure about C-16.

Does the Unocal have the same motor octane as the VP that you used to run? I am using it in a 12:5:1 thin head gasket 4-stroke. I would like to run something a little different maybe something with a little oxygenation, but I have to keep the motor octane over 110 or it will break head studs and blow head gaskets. I have broke 3 or 4 head studs in the motor. I have talked to the builder and he suggested backing the torque on the studs off to 26 to 28 ftlbs, but it didn't work either. I tried to run some Sonoco with a 106 motor octane and it still broke the studs (these are the 12mm heavy studs too). That time I didn't even get a mile down the road and it blew a head gasket. Oh well this year I'm putting a Ross 440 11:2:1 so hopefully I can back the octane off a little and the 440 will hopefully counteract the compression loss because the 12:5:1 was a 416. Just have to wait and see. Thanks for the reply.

The C-14 is I believe 112 or 114 octane. I switched to the Unocal 110 and it runs in my 350r (190psi) no problem and in our race car (220psi, 15:1) no problems either. If the bike is tuned right you should be totally fine with 12.5:1 and 110 octane. If it's not jetted right you are going to get detonation no matter what octane you run (higher octane will just act as a band-aid).
