My 400ex has the stock sprockets and I have the stock wheels and tires and a set of 18" turf tamers on wheels. What do most of you run for 18 inch tires in the back?

16/38 i use this for the farms and wide open riding, my tires are stock and the bike is bone stock, i'd go with a 14 front if i was u for mx/trails

i don't know where you ride or where you want the power to be, but going to a 14 front will really really kill your top speed especially with the 18's on the rear. the 18's along probally hurt your top speed. do you prefer more low end or more top speed?

Thats what I was thinking. I believe I either need to go up in the front or down in the back. I am just wondering how much. How many teeth can I go down in the back before I have to shorten my chain? I need to gain some of the top end back that the 18's took away. Thanks

i have a feeling a 16 tooth up front should get you back pretty close to stock gearing. if you desire more top speed you can always run 16/36. with the 16 up front you may need to grind a little down off of your case saver. its not hard. this is what i did anyways. i know you can go down two teeth in the rear while using the same chain. i don't know if you can go down 3 or more though.

it depends a lot on what ridin u do. if ur talkin for mx, then it depends on the track, and mods. big long somewhat open track + stock or near stock quad w/18" tires, i would say 15/36 or 16/38. tight technical track + stock or near stock quad w/ 18" tires, i would go with 15/38. big long somewhat open track + a nicely modified motored quad w/ 18" tires, i would go with either a 16/36 or 16/37( my favorite). tight technical track + a nicely modified motored quad w/ 18" tires, i would say 15/36 or 16/38. these r what i would use on a 400ex.

My motor is pretty much stock, I only have the LRD full stystem exhaust, jetted carb, and no airbox lid. I'm gonna try the 15/36 for now and probably end up getting the 16 for the front also so I can interchange. Thanks

I have a 34 on the back and a 16 on the front but I have all the power I need to push the gearing.

i have 20 inch rears and stock sprocket size. for more acceleration lik of the line should i go lower or higher in the front?

for more low end power you will either need to go smaller on the front or bigger on the rear. however, this will affect your top speed.

if u want more low end, does it matter which sprocket you choose? Either to go lower in front or bigger in the back? Does changing one have more of a benefit than the other?

If you go down a tooth on the front sprocket, you will gain more low end but like others said lose topend. The front sprocket is cheaper than the rear and I believe that going down one tooth in the front is about the same as going up two or three in the rear.

if you want larger change with top end or acceleration then go up/down one in front....if you just want a small change then go up or down one-2 in the rear..........otherworse...you will notice a more drastic change in the front sprocket then you would in the rear.
