Air/fuel Screw Question

Ok what exactly does this screw do. Also i was told to screw it all the way in and then go 2and 1/2 turns out with it. As i was screwing it in i felt tesion. How do you know when it is screwed in all of the way.

Screwing it out richens the mixture from idle to approx. 1/8 throttle. You turn it in until it boottoms out (won't turn in anymore), but do it gently, you don't want to score the needle, then turn it out the 2 1/2 complete turns.

You use a small screwdriver. Grab the screwdriver by the shaft and not the handle. Screw in until you feel resistance then back it out the required number of turns. DONT over tighten when seating the screw.

well i installed a 42 pilot and was told to go out 2 1/2 turns and now i am getting a weird odor when im idling . Could this be from the screw ?
