if i removemy choke on my 400ex, how hard will it be to start? I sometimes ride in up to -5 or -10 degree weather, am i better off leaving it on? and if i do take it off, do i have to change anything else?

I took my choke off, and put a 42 piolet in. If you are going to remove your choke, than its going to require a 42 piolet. I ride as cold as -20, and my 400 starts fine. I went 2 1/2 turns out on the mixture screw and its almost perfect. I would recomend take the choke out, makes a lot better throttle responce. My 4-wheeler starts every time with no pumps of the gas. It was ouside for a week at -50, and when it warmed up to -15 I threw a tarp over it and put the space heater on it for a good 20 minutes, and it fired up and ran strong as soon as I hit the starter button. I would recomend doing this cheap mod;)

I agree I dont have any problems in Connecticut. I would sugjest putting in the 42 piolet & tring to start it without the choke once you get use to doing that then remove the choke. just because you remove the choke dosnt mean you cant put it back in, just dont be stupid and throw it away keep it, I still have mine incase I sell the bike.

How much would a 42 piolet cost because I sometimes have trouble starting mine in the colder weather.

How hard is it to start. Went riding today, morning ride temp 5*. When we left -5 here at the house. No choke mod, just make sure you have a good battery, pump the throttle wide open about 3-5 times then hit the started. You may have to repeat it a few times till she gets a litle heat in her but after that you are good to go

After reading alot of info on this site ,I decided to remove my choke. I removed the stock pilot, put in a 42. You have to pump the throttle once or twice then hit the starer. It has worked great for me. It starts alot easier for me. We had an ice storm last week and it stared fine. It was about 25 degrees. Thats about as cold as the daytime temps get here in NC. I am PLEASED!

I have a 39mm FCR (they have no choke) and mine starts fine at
-10. I have to pump the throttle 3 or 4 times then start, then repeat 3 or 4 time. Just let it warm up good before you go ride.

it could stay on but you probably wont need it, im going to do the same thing-put on a 42 without taking off the choke and try it

Can you run the 42 pilot jet year-round? Oh and can someone post instructions and maybe a few pics on how to take the choke off? thanks

Thanks a bunch hondarider! I'm going to remove the choke tonight and take it for a spin to see how it does. i have a 42 pilot in there right now so like they said on the thread the choke is useless. Well thanks a million hondarider.
