allright im 19 and have always been into dirtbikes. I got into quads about a year ago. I made a big mistake and bought a brand new 300ex. Thats 4500 right there. I know traded it for a 250r and have put about 1500 into the 250r. So some advice for you young ones, I would never buy a new quad again. They lose so much value as soon as you walk out the door with them. If I could go back I would have started off used and built a bike.

Too much just before I turned 16 i had over $10,000 in my 400, maybe $12,000 including the $4000 i paid for it when i got it used. If i add it up, $1200 for my 1st 440 motor, $4000 for the second one, wb's and sparks pipes $1000, 2 sets of bars $150, sets of rims n' tires (3) $900, Elka suspension $1625, (2) k&n filters w/ outerwares $100, ac bumper, full dg skids, um airbox, omf scoops, prm grabbar, gussets, repainted... i think thats it except for routine maintainance & gas which my parents pay for the gas, the rest is all from workin my @$$ off

I hope that it's not 2 personal 2 ask this? But how & where do you folks get the money & time 2 buy these machines of beauty? I make $50,000+ a year, but am having a hard time finding a decent quad for a decent price? Am I looking in the wrong places? Where's a good place 2 look, I'm in AZ. I'm also very short, 5'4" 135lbs. I don't know for sure if that makes a big difference in the selection of a quad? Thanks, I hope that I didn't over step my bounds?

nky400

if it is too personal to ask, then whoever doesn't want to answer won't.

some folks just have money to spare, some have there parents help out or pay for it, others are just in debt beyond belief. i am a 21 year old college student. i have a job - an ok one i guess, and i live at home. so i don't have to worry about paying for much. i don't have a car payment and i don't pay my insurance. i pay for my cell phone and my quad. i hope people don't start saying that i am spoiled, because i am (but i don't drive a brand new car and i don't whine when i don't get something). my parents offer to pay for stuff and i take advantage of that. i am blessed with good parents who take care of me very well. as far as my 400ex, i pay for everything that has to do with it. my mom co signed on the loan, but i make the payments. i work a lot so that i can pay for the quad, gas in my car, my cell phone, going out and all the extras on the bike. all of what is leftover usually goes towards the quad. it is a little easier for me because i really don't have any bills, so i can set aside extra money for my quad. i am sure that some have it easier, and some struggle to buy things for their bikes.

as far as time goes.... when you have something that you love so much i.e. - a honda atv you make time for it.

decent prices depend on where you are. it also depends on what you feel is decent and what you are willing to spend. you can buy used 400ex's for $2500-$3500 w/ mods here in kentucky.

sorry that took so long, hope it helps

I'm a college student so money is very tight at times. I didn't buy my machine like it is, I built it up over the course of about 4-5 years, like most people on this site. There are a few spoiled people that have mom and dad buy everything but a lot of us just save up and spend every extra few bucks here and there to make them look better. I can't begin to imagine how many hours I have in my R alone of wrenching, polishing, fabricating, etc. Probably more than most guys have in their custom hot rods. Labor is what can kill you if you don't do that stuff yourself.
I bought a lot of my parts used, and did lots of comparison shopping. Also it helps when you aren't married and don't have kids, mortgage, etc.!
What kind of quad you need really depends on what kind of riding you do. If you want a machine to learn on, you can pick up 400ex's pretty cheap now that the new 450R's and YFZ's are out. Check out www.cycletrader.com
If you are going to buy a new machine you might as well start with a Honda 450R or Yamaha YFZ450, since you'll end up putting the price difference into an EX within a year for mods. At 5'4 135lbs you'll fly on one of those machines.
If you like duning and tweaking things to the point of insanity like I do, a Honda 250R or Yamaha Banshee is a good machine. The amount of modifications you can do to those is endless. If you don't have the time to learn about the quad and don't do your own wrenching I'd probably get a newer 4 stroke since they are more of a "gas it and go" type quad.

Thanks, that pic really doesn't do it justice. The paint is a white pearl with blue hues and the flames are candy blue. It comes alive in the sunlinght. The frame is PC candy blue too.
I'm gonna hate to see it go but I'm gonna sell it.

I lost count how much I have in my 250r trike, but its over 5 grand. all redone motor, 330, elka shock, ported cylinder, coo head, all hinson stuff in motor, cr ignition, lsr axle, wave rotors, redone forks, set of beadlocks, 18" mx tires, new plastics, new front tire, esr pipe, swingarm, carrier and I'm sure I forgot a good bit. newest purchase: roll 86/87 250r pegs(gonna oval the holes so they fit) $200. I'm sure the next item to the list is a aftermarket swingarm, as jumping 20-30 feet WILL crack the swinger.

I've got over $1300 in the tecate already not counting buying it, I spent another $500 on the 4-stroke idea but recovered the money spent there. I am fabbing most of the parts myself so that will save a ton of cash, alot of the parts that I have bought were used parts on ebay cause you can't find new parts easily. I'll have about $1700 in the engine for the 330cc. I am polishing all the aluminum by hand. getting everything PC for $150 but I have to prep it myself. I designed the long travel suspension. I'm guessing I will spend another $4000 before I ever get to ride it.
I'm hoping that I gain alittle respect for restoring this quad. Most people would have parted it out and that would be another tecate gone forever! I'm putting alot of blood sweat and tears into this machine, I hope the tecate fans appretiate it! when I start posting the pics I hope no one slams it because I haven't knowingly slammed anyone elses machine
When it is done it SHOULD be much better than a new tecate4 ever was.
I realize I could have bought a new quad for the money but I enjoy building my toys myself. although this time I am shipping the engine work out (its the smart thing to do IMO)
.
I don't race quads, It is just a toy. My goal is that when people see it they see all the extra work that went into it. Although most of it will probably go unnoticed.

About 800 dollars, and about 700 of that is shop bills just to keep it working.

HAD a decent paying job...:( No kids, do all the work myself. And the... ahem... ocassional charge card use! :D

I have a rule. I never get or buy parts for toys on credit because it will get away from you! I have been building my quad and my truck out of pocket. CASH ONLY!

I have no kids, 50k+ job with out/O.T. so O.T.helps alot. Get some bonus checks if I'm good with no rework. There is some $$ to be made wrenching!
What hurts is when the wife wants to upgrade the house! It takes my toy fund away. But she make as much as I do which helps alot too. :p
Nice part is the only bill we have is the house and we owe less on that than some poeple do on their cards!
