Pappy
01-29-2004, 05:39 PM
yep i bought the yfz. i was all set to buy the cannondale when my wife found out. all afternoon she ragged my rear end about no local dealers blah blah blah.

so on the way home we swung into TWIGG CYCLES hoping to get a glimpse of the new trx450r. thiers are due in anyday so there wasnt nothing to look at:p the wife sez, buy the damn thing and ill pay for it:eek: well you cant pass that up...no way:D

so the rep(helluva guy) Steve Fierro and i start talking quads. I tell him about exriders.com and the next thing i know he has me hooked up!!! they really did treat me right. anyone in the maryland/west virginia/southern pennslyvania thats lookin to buy any brand should check them out. it has been a long time since i met sincere and decent salesmen. no bs ...no hype. they did me right.

harlen and i had discussed getting a yfz so we could do comparision reviews and parts right ups.....so now we can:cool:

i know some will b!tch that its a yammy. well the BIGGEST factor in buying this over the TRX was one little option i cant live without. ELECTRIC START:macho ive heard enough about the yfz that i feel mighty comfortable with the purchase. i will still pick up a trx450r soon enough. besides.....what better person to offer UNBIASED info on the yammy and honda then me:blah:

JDiablo
01-29-2004, 05:41 PM

Pappy ... Great choice of quads . I'm sure you will be impressed with the Yamaha . The only problem I have had , has been the battery , but it seems to have settled itself . I think the problems I had , were because the battery was new and hadn't been run hard enough . Who knows but it's goign well now . I have owned Honda's , Suzuki's and now this Yamaha . I am unbiased as to which brand I run . It took me almost a year to decide , before getting the Yamaha . I knew about the battery problems they ahd even before buying the quad . You can tell Pappy is still a true Honda rider ... he got the White and Red one LOL ( atleast i think he did) . Pappy get that thing out in the snow and kick it sideways .... it'll throw a roost pretty good and the stock tires actually hook up quite well on hard packed snow . Congrats on the new purchase ... and let us know what kind of mods you will be adding to it . First thing I'm doing is either a TC pipe or a Sparks ... maybe an HMF .

Pappy if you can pull away from the HMF pipes take a look at the Thunder Alley, I had the sparks, and rode a full system hmf equipped yfz before I made the switch, and am not dissapointed, if you ever come down to ky for any reason look me up before hand, and you can ride it and see first hand how it feels, the difference in the pipes is more drastic than i had imagined, almost like going from just the pipe to the cam mod difference.

Hmmm ... you getting the YFZ should make for some fairly good competition at the Hatfield rides . I guess I wont be one of the only few there with a YFZ ( if i can make it out there).

actually i never asked for a discount. i relayed the information about exriders.com and that was that. first time i ever had a dealer offer me something that i didnt smirk at:p he was happy no matter what i bought and had ZERO negatives about either quad. alot of places talk down one brand or another. i was very content in the way he matched the two quads up. i kinda knew what i wanted when i walked in the door.....but he did a great job representing the dealership. AAA+++ in my book.

i reckon if i was a brand name top of the line racer i would expect that kind of treatment...but being a backwoods hillbilly kinda caught me off gaurd:D

pappy i did the same thing a month ago with the V Force. walked into the dealer to just check them out with no intention of buying one, and 2 days later i was picking it up with the wif. funny how that happens.

seatec
01-30-2004, 07:22 AM
So, can you tell us what deal you got on the yfz?

I know you want a fair comparison between the two stock quads but i would go a little higher on the jetting in the yfz just for preventative measures. Congrats on the QUad Pappy.

You know, seeing that you got a Yfz and the line between good and bad quads is blurring , maybe Harlen should consider making this site a little less Honda orineted and more general quad. It may serve a larger community of quad riders. This site is no longer just a site but almost a mecca for quad riders. Just a thought. I think it woudl also serve our sponsor since most of them are not single Brand oriented and might get better sales out if.

Pappy
01-30-2004, 07:30 AM
lol...this site has been heading to a brand unspecific for the last 2 years. you will still have some die hard opionated folks that will bicker back and forth. and there are good reasons for choosing one brand over the other but as you mention, the line is not as cut and dry as it used to be.

harlen and i both feel that inorder to be a greater asset to our sponsors and members we cant take a one sided hardliner approach to other brands.

and i do agree, people come to this site for a variety of reasons....and IMO #1 is the simple fact its just a fun place to exchange ideas and hang out. our sponsors see value in this, and the new race coverage is drawing in the top names in the atv racing world.

noone forces people to come here or stay...so if they wanna b!tch and cry...they are free to roll out:bandit:

Congrats Pappy! I can't wait to hear your final opinion on both machines. I'm guessing the electric start is what sold the Yamaha:o :D

Pappy
01-30-2004, 07:39 AM
thats the only reason i chose the yfz over the trx. electric start. if you do a search you will find i have been very disapointed in honda not having one. (dont anyone start b!tchin about electric start isnt needed blah blah blah)

i have grown used to hitting the button ..especially if i bone headly stall on a steep creek bank covered in slime. there is just some things i am unwilling to go with out...and the electric start is #1

seatec
01-30-2004, 07:40 AM
I am sure, as somebody already mentioned before, that eventually the TRX can be retro fitted with a E-start either by third party or after the CRF450X version has been introduced.
I cant wait to go ride with Honda5 at the landing and try his trx450. if the engine is anything like the one i had in the crf450 its going to be killer.

Pappy
01-30-2004, 07:43 AM

can you give any comparisons at all between the trx and yfz? i know you just got your yfz but you said you rode one before. i still can't decide which to get. i just sold my 400 and will buy something by spring.

i think it comes down to what you are going to do and expect from the quads.

the yfz is probably more "ready" outta the crate whereas the honda will be more user friendly. i just spent 20 minutes documenting everything i liked about the yfz.....and what i didnt like.

likes:

power is great
handles like a champ
suspension isnt bad for stock

the details are pretty kick *** for a stock quad:
adjustable clutch perch
adjustable brake lever
greasable a arm bushings
controls are pretty close to spot on
peg height and location are really good (for me anyway)

probably the best yamaha has ever produced. well ill say it IS the best to date from them.

dislikes:

seat is designed for mx (stiff and thin)
the chain adjuster is typical yamaha.....shoot me now:p
the stock exhaust sound is a bit weak
i didnt like that the front hubs and rear hubs dont match in color(just me i figure:p )

i will wait to say how well it fairs against the honda till i can actually do a good comparison.

the honda .....well lets say i thought it was pretty cool. my wife summed it up best when she said it looked like a 400ex with different plastics:eek: :) (women:rolleyes: )

it feels so much like the 400ex when you just sit on it. the seat is a bit different then the 400ex...but still typical honda. (felt great)

the shocks on the honda look much better then the 400ex. felt better too:devil:

power is great, id love to ride one with the hrc kit.

honda quality throughout no doubt. i geuss the yfz impresses me because...well...IM NOT USED TO SEEING A YAMAHA THIS GOOD:cool: they have a great quad...so does honda. you could literaly flip a coin and proably be happy with the outcome

the question is how did you think the honda handled

Pappy, I think you just sumed up what is causing so much friction between guys now. Blue guys have something that is spot-on and Red guys don't want to accept something other than red that is spot-on. There is not and probably should not be a clear "winner" in this. Everyone should relish the fact that we have a machine from BOTH of these manufacturers that are just simply that dam good.

EVERYONE PLEASE do not turn this into a flame fest, if it does I'm deleting my post. I am not trying to start anything, just making an observation.

Bad Habit, you said what needed to be said. neither quad is perfect, but both are close enough that this sport just took a kick *** leap forward:macho its been missing...hell it never was:cool:

dont delete your post. if anyone has BS to post ill handle them. i dont get mad if someone posts intelligent info...its the rehtoric i find boring and will be dealt with.

Like someone else said .... don't mind the glowing red head pipe while idling... goes away while ridding ... but then again you probably already know this . Let me know if you have any battery problems . After you have it fully charged , take it down the road about a mile ... turn it off for about 10 minutes then start it back up again . Let me know if its holding its charge . Mine is working great now ( atleast so far) . Even though it does have a hard seat, I got used to it very quickly and I find it so much easier to move around on it than ridding a quad that has a softer seat . Your picture of just the hood looks almost identical to the picture I took of mine when I forst got it . Wish I could afford to pay the $$ to post pictures , but it's a little too much for this Canucks blood . Sorry guys , maybe once I'm back to work from the surgery I'll buy my membership and post pictures Ive taken of the quad so far.

mine wont look like yours for long:p

LOL ... I can just imagine what yours is going to look like in about 3 months from now . You're gunna make me drool and TRY and spend tons of cash to make it look just as good as yours. Wish I could post a pic of my glowing head pipe ... because I was using a crappy digi cam ... the pipe looks pink ... but in reality it was almost " see Through" hot

Have you already started powder coating things?? I just noticed my pipe guard isn't the same color !?!?!?! Either you're already hard at work ... or I got ripped off . LOL :blah:

i found out all about the headpipe. i unloaded the quad right at dark...let it warm up and proceeded to pull off my driveway. )i forgot we had about 10 inches of snow:( ) so after i drag the quad thru a snow drift i ride it to my garage. i look down and im like----> WTF:p

HAHAHA ... I knew about the headpipe thing because of what others have told me . I was letting the quad warm up outside one night and my dad was standing beside it ... then I'm like " Dad take a look at the pipe " He looked and his face just dropped. Never heard someone say " Turn the F ****ing thing off before it blows " so fast . Had a good laugh about it and had to explain the whole " pipe" situation to him . Try taking it down the road on hard packed snow . The stock tires actually hook up not too bad . I gotta find someone in the area that does powder coating . Wouldn't mind doing a few small things on it either . Does Burgard make a long travel suspension for these quads yet? If so can you let me know prices and specs on the bike and let me know if he/they are willing to ship to Canada . Also if you had pics of their products I wouldn't mind seeing a few . If your opinion ... what is the nicest looking bumper on the market for these bikes?? I like the looks of the Duncan ... but the good old AC with a dirt screen looks nice on any quad out there .

Pappy
01-30-2004, 09:24 PM
yeah burgard make LT for it. i havent decided on LT or not as of yet. and yes he ships to canada. if you look at his site the a arms on the home page are standard or LT depending on how you want them.

i honestly havent even looked at many aftermarket parts yet. im gonna wring this one out stock for awhile i think. we have a lot of reviews and comparison tests to do so we want her stock...and yes its killin me:p

i know it needs a bigger tank for XC. and i have rear hipers, but i have to order the new front sections for the fronts

Let me know how you like those Hypers when you install them . Now that you have a YFZ ... I'm gunna be asking you how the parts you're installing on it have improved the quad . Whats burgards website??
