My bike seems like it wants to studder before it starts. It backfires pretty bad when its first being start and its cold. once its running its fine doesnt backfire hardly at all. If I put a new plug in it it fires right up everytime, I ride all day and the nexted day it dont want to start again put a new plug in and once again fires right up...?????

black is bad ,but not near as bad as white ,seems ya need jetting or mess with the fuel ?

easy way to test
take out the plug and wipe it off, if its black put it back in a rev it up a few times and it will prob be a wet black then its jetted to rich

but like rico pointed out check your jetting on a warmed up motor

one thing i can't stress enough is don't keep hitting the gas when trying to start it. you won't get anywhere. if you going to hit the gas only do it 2 or 3 times and then just hit the start button without giving it ANY more gas. if the plugs are coming out wet black your just fouling them because your giving them too much gas.

what mods do you have on the bike that you need a 170 main jet. if just have a pipe and a filter 170 is way to high. what mods do you have...

HMF has jetting recommendations on their site. Most are in the 170-200 range. I was surprised when I saw that, but I think they know more about their pipes than we do;)

We dont no your whole story but its not always the jetting. check the ignition system for a strong spark. if a coil or stator is on the way out you may have to weak of a spark uncapable of burning the mixture. this happened to me on a 2 stroke boat every time I wanted to go out Id have to clean the plug or it wouldnt start. eventualy I got sick of it and tested the ignition system. bad stator $400 later empty wallet & no more problems with the motor

I had the same problem until i chaged my main jet to a 152 and messed with the fuel to air screw a couple times now its runs fine. Felt a power increase 2 once i got inn jetted right so its prolly a jetting problem.

i think ur jetting might be a lil rich but i dont that thats the problem if u got all the eninge work. i put a 170 when i got my hmf just to see if they were right it was rich but not like engine problem rich. check some other stuff first.
