Hey people! I am new to this site. Wish I found it a few years ago. Anyway, I need to upgrade my 400EX for the dunes. I plan on getting the TRX450R when it has Elc. Start, but until then, I need more from my 400. So far, it is stock other than: K&N, FMF Power Bomb Head Pipe, FMF Q, Dino Jet Kit, Works triple rate front shocks, and a twist throttle. I want to keep the reliability of the engine so my wife can ride it later. Thank you.

run a 14 tooth front sprocket, It will help alot in the sand & they are cheap.

That is in my plan. 1 tooth smaller front sprocket. Someone told me that the XR 400 camshaft and piston will make better power without hurting reliability. Any comments?

I have run the xr 400 cam& it is ok ,but i like the hotcam alot better. The hot cam is alot more responsive on top, which i like in the dunes. A 10:8 to 1 piston & a hotcam will only set you back about 300 including having your cylinder bored.

I would get a cam and a 11:1 piston and if you want get some head port work done and that will wake up you Ex a little.
By the way Welcome to EXriders!!:D

I would get a hotcams stage two, JE 11to1 426 piston (some here will say get a 416 but I prefer a 426) porting, heavy duty valve springs. CDI, The 14t sprocket will help a lot. Get light sand tires and wheels. Don't get sand tires with tall paddles.

Hey, i found a really great company that is makin some sick *** exhaust systems for all types of bikes. It is called LTE Racing, they make a SICK *** underseat system for about $600 and it comes with the aluminum air box that relocates the battery to the inside of the box. Check it out.

This all sounds great! I planned on a front sprocket. Wanted to avoid the head work and porting. Sounds like I might have to do it anyway! It would have been easier if Honda would have put electric start on the new TRX450R! I would have one in the garage with paddles right now! Thanks for the info.

there is a 450 with elec start. called a yfz! Unless you are a diehard honda fan, you should look at the yfz. I don't think hondas gonna come out with a elect start 450r!

I looked at the YFZ 450. It felt like I was sitting on a Raptor! You could not give me a Raptor! It pushes every corner in the dunes and sucks in the air!

I was told I had a web cam and I just found out it is an HRC......and I am damn impressed with it. Instead of just going to a higher compression piston look at the 416 kit. It does not cost that much more and if you feel the need for more power you have the option of going to a 4.5 mm stroker which will put you at 440. Everyone says that the WB exhaust is junk but mine is holding together great. You can get it under the sound limit. The HMF system with the quiet core will get you 96dbs.

The yfz is no raptor, it is a nice dune machine.

By the look of your items you have already, id say what you really need is Paddles! LOL
I think for the dunes, a nice improvement will always be the pipe. THe pipe ( and it can be any pipe that is reputable) really helps your low to mid for the dunes, especially if your doing any trail dune riding. If your planning on giving it to your wife, perhaps you should just start off small and make sure she is going to like riding it how you set it up. My wife liked my bike alot more when all i had was the pipe and the cam. THen I went and dumped alot more into it, now she doesnt like the power delivery on it. Yet she rides a Banshee, i set the 400 up for a top end bike.
