I think whoever is making the brake pads for the 400ex is making a killing. I just replaced my rear pads for the 3rd or 4th time in less than a year!!!

I have removed the parking brake, checked the piston near the foot brake, cleaned the calipers, checked for drag, and done everything except pouring ASTRO GLIDE on them.....

My last set of pads, EBC lasted ONE DAY!!!!! I never used the back brakes once! What a poopy setup!

Does anyone know if the EBC SV (Severe Duty) pads really hold up or not????

After 3 sets of brake pads I went with the EBC SV. Ive had them on there now for 4 months and they show hardly no sign of wear.
I would give them a try. My first 3 sets wore because I didnt take off the parking brake, now she dosent eat those $38.00 pads up no more. Since you had already none this, I would say something else is wrong!

I think jabbers gettin his controls screwed up,,,he's usin the brake as the clutch,,the clutch for the gas and the thumb throttle as a brake or sumtin of that nature. That or he's scared ta put the hammer down and he's ridin the brake like an old lady...ha haaa........:D :D

What year is your bike?

Honda has a recall for many 2001 bikes because of this problem. I can check for the serial numbers if your like. They will fix the problem free of charge if you have one of those bikes.

Jabber: I fragged a set of pads in one day before, twice actually. First time a stick got between the frame and brake lever on a hillclimb and I didn't know it. After getting to the top and going another 1/2 mile, I found it, but it was too late.

Other time might be some help for you. The pins the brake pads mount on had some crud on them. Not a lot, but apparently enough to prevent the pads from floating freely. After hitting them with a wire wheel, all was right in the world again and Ive had the same set of brake pads on the back since last fall.

If you use the gray colored pads, you will get great stopping power but they will wear fast. If you have these pads on and it is muddy they can wear out in one day because of the mud. I have found that the heavy duty (gold color from EBc will last just about the longest ofany. But, again in mud they will wear quickly again but not as fast as the reg gray colored pads.
At the dealer trade show last weekend I asked the tech person at the EBC booth about this problem. He said changing to a solid rotor for mud would help, but when dry use the vented on to cool the pads. I asked him if the EBC SV pads are any better. He told me that from there test that they only lasted about 12% longer than the heavy duty pads. He said for the cost stay with just the heavy duty pads. the word from the horses mouth, suprise, suprise.

if you can afford it i highly suggest the switch to a 250r rear brake setup. the are dual piston calipers and the brake pads have about twice the brake surface. it will run around 200-300 to do but it's worth it.

True,

I'm not sure exacly what's wrong with 'em but all they said is that it caused the break pads to wear a lot faster or simply fail.

I have had good luck with the sever duty ebc. The best price is on Rocky Mountain. I also had good luck with Versah brand.

Definitely make sure your rotor is not warped at all. That can really F#@* your braking system up. It cost me over 200 to fix on my Kodiak

What controls??? I thought my 400ex was an automatic! You mean there are gears? Whoah!!! I didn't know it had a thumb throttle, I been pushing it up the hills, and riding back down. Know wonder I get so pooped. When my friend tows me home, I use the brake to slow down both vehicles to keep the rope tight.

I don't think the rotor is warped, I'll check it next time I have it up off the ground and running. I did however ride in severe muddy conditions all day. I think for starters, I will check the rotor, try the Severe Duty pads, then go for a completely different brake system on the rear.. the front brakes are still the stock pads and have half life left.

Like I said, if you ride in the mud you pads will not last very long. The reason for this is the holes in your brake rotor. The holes fill up with drit and that dirt has little pieces of sand or rocks and when the rotor goes around that dirt wears on the soft pads(gray colored ones) and cuses them to wear out quicker. The heavy duty pads will last longer because they are made of a harder compound. If you change to a solid rotor your pads will last longer.

I am selling a 250r braking system .If you are interested PM me .

Check for a warped rotor, there is no way it should be going through brake pads that fast w/ the parking brake removed. Also make sure the wheels turn freely, the piston may be sticking. Make sure the pad bolts are not rusted also.

Where to buy a solid rotor for the 400ex, and how much?
