My quad is a bit@h to start in this cold weather. I have an E-series with 12 disks and a 152 main. If i up my pilot size will this help it to start and run better. And can i also use the same pilot in the summer time.

Stock in a 400 is 38. I have a 42 in mine. I still need the choke to start it, but it did make it start a lot easier with the bigger pilot. You should be able to run the 42 year round.

Yes it helps. 40 or 42 will work.

ok so year round no problem. I am also noticing that once and a while when i warming the motor and revving it it will pop a few times when i let off the throttle. Does this also pertain to the pilot jet ?

I run a 42 pilot year around so when you put it in fa get about it...:D

Sounds like you also are runnin lean on the main jet too if it's poppin..

The popping is a indication of a lean condition. Usually it will show itself on decelerating in gear. The pilot will fix that problem too. The air/fuel screw can also be used to (help) remedy this problem, but it can only do so much.

well i had a 155 main in and no popping. I then put in the 152 and she is popping. But the 152 seems to give a little more top end for some reason.

you will have slightly better top end because your leaning the air/fuel ratio out. ;)

go with the 42. you will probally have to mess with your fuel skrew on the bottom of the carb. i would start about 2 turns out or so.

yes, i like to remove the carb or at least turn it in the boots so you can take the 4 skrews out that hold the bowl on. your pilot jet is right next to your mainjet.

good luck

so if i go with the 42 im gonna have to make other adjustments ?

you may just have to tinker with your fuel skrew. but don't worry, it is on the bottom of the carb so disecting your bike isn't needed.

The excessively rich mixture from the 155 main was probably masking the lean condition of the pilot circuit. Go to a 42 pilot to cure the popping (also make sure you don't have any leaks in your exhaust system). Then you might want to try a 150 main, you might get even more top end and crisper throttle response. More fuel does not necessarily mean more power, what you really want is to get the fuel mixture to the ideal concentration to make the most powerful explosion.

ok the 42 is in along with the 155. Now when i start it it will idle for 10 seconds and die unless i give it gas. It also did this before with the stock pilot. I even played with the idle screw a little bit. But it still wont idle. Any suggestions ???

not trying to be a smart@ss... but are you letting it warm up? I have the 42 pilot and stock main right now... and I just put my nerf bars and skid plate on a few min ago... then turned my gass on... full choke, pumped throttle twice, hit the starter button.. and it started right up... and it is 30 deg right now... put it on half choke let it idle givin it some gas everyonce in a while... turned choke completely off.. and it ran just fine...

ya i was revving it for about 2 minutes and holding the throttle a little bit.

is this were the fuel/air screw comes into play

yes this would be where the mixture screw comes into play. I would say about 2 1/2 turns out on the mixture screw should be good. It was -20 out tonight...My 400 was out side, I covered it in a tarp, put the space heater on it for about 15 minutes, and when the instant I hit the start button it fired and ran fine. I took the heater off and let it run for a while and it was fine. I have the 42 piolet at 2 1/2 turns out on the screw. I was at 3 and it would only idle for a little bit and than die. 2-2 1/2 should be good;)
