i know i have posts coming out the a** but im sorta new to the 400ex. when checking oil do i screw in the dipstick cap or just let it rest on top of the thread to get correct reading?

When checking your oil you need to let it set for a couple of minutes at idle, turn it off and check it immediately. I think that's in the service manual and it's usually the method I use. Be careful - when I first got mine I pulled it off the trailer to ride and checked it and thought it was really low so I added about 1/3 quart. Stopped on the trails and it was so full the entire oil tank was full. It can be deceptive...

The owners manual says after running the quad, let it sit for a few minutes before checking. Then check without screwing in.

yep, warm the bike up. unskrew it and stick it all the way in WITHOUT skrewing it. pull it out and check the level. make sure your on flat ground too.
