Hey guys,

Just a quick question...

Is it possible to remove the swingarm pivot bolt w/o removing the axle, shock, and basically stripping down the rear end??

Yes....If you take out the swing arm bolt, one of the two shock bolts, the chain off, and the rear brake caliper off the whole rear end will pull right out.

With the bike up in the air fully unloaded use a jack stand to support the swing arm, un bolt the lower shock mount and it will slide right out (if you have greased it previously!!). This will only work if it slides out! Grease it up and slide it back in and bolt up the shock.

What I was thinking about doing was pulling the swingarm bolt out, greasing the bearings and the bolt and putting it back in....that's all. Quick and easy.....

Anyone w/ a 400ex done this??

I don't really want to remove the whole swingarm, but if I have to I will.

You can do exactly what you said. It should only take you 10 minutes. Grease it up real good when you put it back.

Go ahead and zerk it, drill and make it so you can grease it without ever taking it out..

Yes it is possible to put new swingarm bearings and such without removing anything but the bolt...i just put new swingarm bearings in mine...and all i did was put the swingarm by the axle on a jack so the swingarm is level with the quad, and pull the bolt out...put the bolt it, tighten up and your set :blah:

the nut is loose and the bolt spins but will not slide(aka beat on)out; any suggestions? I've got to replace the shift shaft.

LTB, that is a common problem with the 400. They have to be lubed often.

This might help.

After you install the zerk in one end, and plug the other, you drill holes in the bolt to allow the grease to come out in the desired places.

so i drill a hole strait down the bolt, then drill holes threw it? where do i get the zerk nipple?

The bolt is hollow. Only thing you drill is 2 holes the size of a pencil lead in the proper areas were the spacer tubes ride in the swingarm. Plug one end and tap the other or tap both ends.

Hardware store, tool supply. You will need to measure or take the bolt into them and get a pipe tap too.;)

That sounds like a real good idea to eliminate the problems of seizing bolts and replacing bearings...

the only question I had was how do you know when you've put enough grease in there?? I know on my old Blaster (Yamaha's suck!) the ends of the a-arms had a cup where the grease could ooze out of. Does the Honda work the same way on the swingarm??

What about this weakening the bolt??

Is it okay to lightly heat the frame where the bolt goes through? I've tried everything but cutting the swingarm off.:(

Does anyone know?

do a post search and they talk all about the holes and cutting the bolt off with a saws all . I don't like to use the torch unless all else doesn't work
