Well today I raced a nearly stock 400ex, and got my a** handed to me! I can't figure out how he keeps beating me!! O.K so heres the specs on both bikes:

MINE: 1999 400ex with all mods that are in my sig, and my jetting is almost perfect(maybe a little lean). I also have 22-11-9 tires and a 13 tooth sprocket.

OTHER 400EX: 2003 400ex stock except for one of those exhaust caps that you can get on Ebay, and I'm pretty sure he's running way too lean.

When we start off we're side by side till about 2-3rd gear then the stock 400 will gain about 2-3 bike lenghts all the way til the end and I cannot catch him!! We've tryed trading bikes and when I ride his bike I just walk away from mine even more! So, What do all of you think?:huh

Get a 14 or 15 tooth front sprocket... 13 must be to low.

Maybe you have low compression. Unless you did a top end rebuild you have a 5 year old piston.

Maybe you need to learn how to ride:eek2: .

So how is it that when I jump on his bike I beat my bike by even a greater margine than he or any of the other 3 guys do? Turst me I know how to ride!! I started on 3 wheelers when I was 8

Time for a rebuild. Spend a little, get a lot!

your gearing sounds too low

try 20" tires and a 14 tooth...22's weight and mass just bog the ol 4 hundy down......I had the same problem with my old 440. With all of your mods theres not too many to give it ALOT more power..so I think its just gearing and tire weight/mass

I think if it was gearing, you'd at least get the holeshot.

Some machines just run better than others. No rhyme or reason.

ps- 13's not too low with 22's in my opinion.

You probably need a rebuild more then anything, but yeah those 22" tires aren't helping you any..

Hey thanks guys but, I'm coming to the conclusion that it's my gearing mor than anything. When I bought the bike in the winter of 02' the original owner had run two tanks of gas through it at the most! So, when I bought it the engine was barely run in. Now I've put maybe 100 hours on it. I'll do a compression test on it and find out for sure. If it is the engine then I guess I'll be phoning C&D!!

All tracks are pretty heavy even when i used them on my 440 it slowed it way down.

Its you gearing ask rider11x when he was running a 13 tooth he was haveing trouble keeping up with my old stock 300.He went back to stock gearing and it was like night and day.

it also could be that his is a '03 and it has a 38mil carb insted of the old 35.5mil carb. but I dunno:huh

Absolutely! It was 14/38 gearing I was running on my stock 400, against 13/36 gearing on his piped 300ex. I got toasted!:eek2: I went home  , and swapped to a 15T front and came back to whoop him with a vengance!
Huge Difference!

Also, if in doubt about a rebuild, do a compression check! It really depends on the actual hours on your machine, and how it is taken care of. (Oil changes, warm ups, etc.)

1.I would change your front sprocket.
2.Makes sure your filter is clean.
3.I do not know much about your pipe, but you may see if it needs to be repacked. You will lose HP

Well we switched tires, I took off my 22"alltracks and bought some new 20"Razrs, then we raced again;) I got the holeshot by a bike length, then my lead kept growing till I was about 5-6 bike lengths infront of him :macho The tires make a huge difference!
