What type of oil does everyone use in here. I'm using Amsoil in my sons 400ex. And I've been told that's not what I use be using. It's 100% synthetic, and was told by a good source this is the sh@*, when it comes to oils. Now I'm being told different. Any opinions on this..?

mobil 1 15W-50 full syn. I'm sure the amsoil full syn is just as good.

Most old timers ( no offence since your an old timer :D ) will tell you synthetic is bad but most of those guys haven't figured out that it's 2004 not 1982...

Just don't go to that crappy conventional oil that breaks down during a 5 minute warm up...:o

yes they make a 10w40 oil but is it API certified? Only use the oils that are not certified as they contain friction modifiers that may cause clutch problems:)

would the mobile 1 15w-50 be a good weight to run in cold weather, or just warm weather?

Rico!! I know your weren't calling me the OLD TIMER!!! I'll use this case of Amsoil and then I'll go to Mobil. Should have used that first since that's who signs my paycheck.. I hope they don't read this.

I use Amsoil Formula 4-Stroke 0W-40. It's specially formulated to provide protection and performance in recreational four stroke motors. Works awesome in both the hot summers and the cold winters that we get here. No friction modifers, so no problem with clutch slippage.

The Mobil 1 MX4T 4 stroke motorcycle oil is the only full synthetic oil made by Mobil that is designed specifically for atv/m.c. wet clutch applications. Running anything else made by Mobil could cause problems. JD 400EX Rider did his homework with Mobil and they concurred it is the only oil they will recommend for our applications!

That is correct. I did call Mobil Oil Corp and talked to one of there oil gods. They told me they did change the formula on there oils to meet some currecnt standards. I was talking to them mainly about the "red cap 15-50 oil. Last time I went to buy oil a couple days ago and I was comparing the red cap 15-50 oil to the standard 10-40 and others and there is a difference on all the different numbers and Letters for formulas. I will say this there are allot of people on this site that are using the red cap 15-50 oil with no problems with there clutches what so ever. (or i am sure we would here about it)
So maybe Mobil would rather have you pay more for there Mobil 1 MX4T 4 stoke oil than pay less for there 15 - 50 red cap. If your not having problems with the 15-50 red cap I would keep using it. It is certainly cheaper. I just opted for the other at this time, but who knows I very well may change to the red cap in the future to save a little coin. I know one thing the mobil 1 which ever you use has got to better than the non synthetic oils

Cannondale uses a synthetic oil that is not a mobil 1 product and that's what it ships with and is recommended for the life of the motor. There are some synthetics that have friction modifiers which is what WE don't need but the red capped mobil 1 that myself and many other members use does NOT have the friction modifiers that could cause problems.

Gabe has the real imput when it comes to oils and has written and proved all his reasons for using this oil in a 400ex and it not cause problems in any way to the motor.

I"ve been using it for 3 years and no problems, and truly don't see any in the future.:)

Rico I was referring to you and all the others that have been using the 15 50 red cap that have NOT experianced any problems. This very well be a case of another marketing ploy Put a motocycle or atv on the front of the container and it will cost ya another 2-3 bucks. Why tell the caller that the 15/50 will work fine. This was a while back and if the formula had changed it apparently has not have an effect with yours or any one elses clutch.

In fact I thought I read on here at one time and it may have been from what gabe had wrote that the honda full synthetic oil was made by Mobil 1
