If you have a problem with your 400ex fouling plugs when you try and start it, read on.....

I used to foul a spark plug almost every time I tried to start my EX, especially in cold weather. Well, if you get sick of changing the plug everytime you want to ride, take your stock 38 pilot jet and put it in the TOOL BOX!!! Change to a 42 pilot. This will solve your problem. You will notice that you won't foul plugs anymore and your 400ex will run better at idle. If you think this will be too rich, try letting your quad idle at dark with your stock pilot jet. Watch your header pipes glow in no time! You are too lean on the pilot with the stock 38.

Try a 42 and you won't regret it.

Why? Obviously you don't have plug fouling problems.

Rico is a just a big bully and trying to push you around since your new.

Your trick is not new to most of your seasoned members. It's one of the first mods most of us make. I found a banana in the rear to be the best mod.

No offense but that makes no sense. You richen it up to prevent fouling? Do you pump the throttle a lot when you try to start it? If so that is your problem. If it starts hard with the smaller jet and you pump the throttle you will flood it out and foul the plug. Now I guess if you put a 42 pilot in and it starts easier without pumping the throttle I can see why it wouldn't foul the plugs as easy. But it is not the jetting but rather the person trying to start it. Also the pipes glowing doesn't mean anything. That is NORMAL at an idle when it is sitting still. Get some air moveing across it when it when you ride it and they won't glow because they are getting some cooling. You can see it much easier in the dark because it is dark and the pipes are glowing but that in itself doesn't really mean anything.

is that 42 only good for winter riding or all year ?

You can use it in the summer as well but you're going to foul your plugs in the summer because the air is more dense in the summer then in the winter I belive. That's why our 400s are harder to start in the winter and we put 42's in.

Air is more dense when it's cold, so it would be denser in the winter.

I'm a moron, I meant to say that the air was more dense in the winter, oh well the facts are out now anyway and he knows that the air is more dense in the winter. Thanks for correcting me, haha.:p

I"ve ran a 42 pilot year around for the last 2 years. No problems or fouling plugs..

I'm sure you can do it, I've even thought about doing it but your chances of fouling a plug with a 42 opposed to a 38 are much higher. Unless you just pin the throttle the whole time you hit the start button.:)
