whick cam does everyone recommend for woods riding with my set up?

01-15-2004, 08:07 PM
I went with stage 2 hotcam...its what i use and i really like it...although if you arent gonna run a high comp piston i would not go with it and would reccommend the stage 1.

I run an 11:1 piston

You need anything except a topend cam..

hotcam stage 2 = topend cam

From what I have read on this site, your gonna want the Stage 1.b

Stage 2 = more top end.

Hey guys on the WebCam do you need to do upgrade your rockers, valve springs etc.?

HRC cam Drop In Cam

HRC = Honda Racing Corp.

Nice mid to top end cam with little to no low end drop off. Works very well in the woods. Approx. $270.00 from service honda

that sounds more like what I am looking for. does it work well with 11:1?

if u run an 11:1 piston with any cam it will make up for or add low end power to your bike so technically any cam is good with a high comp piston

yes it does.

the quad i have the most expierence with this cam (hrc) is rico's 416. no matter what quad i have we are always damn near equal everywhere in the woods and straights.

ive run with him on my cdale, a 265 r a stock r a 425ex and his just pulls so good that you cant really find a place to get past him. (without running him off the trail....im saving that option:o )

i rode with ugly motha and i believe he runs a hot cams and i could tell adifference in his quad over ricos. ugly's runs good but ricos is just that much better. rico has a solid set up that works.

now that rico has a ported head and some more ponies.....i believe ill have to use the cliff method:devil:

I just got back from the dealer. We compared specs on the cams. The HRC cam is the same as the xr cam. The xr cam profile is inbetween the hot cam 1 and hot cam 2. The web cam was actually the best but I wanted to keep the stock valvetrain. so XR cam is what I got. :)

i don't know what kind of rare breed xr or hrc cams your dealer sells, but the normal ones are not the same. check this thread out:

ya dude they are WAY different...the XR is a weaker cam and doesnt really add that much...while with the HRC it is gonna be quite a bit...same goes with the hotcam or webcam

"Solid Set Up That Works." Glad to here you like that set up pappy. I love It
It was funny when i asked questions about a year ago about cams allot of people complained about the price of the HRC. Rico was one of the only ones that posted that the HRC cam would be one of his top choices for his next cam.

Well Done Rico ;)

I will check back with the dealer on Monday the specs they gave me look just like the HRC profile.

JD400exrider

northeast400. Your dealer does not have a clue if they are telling you that the xr 400 cam is the same as the HRC cam. The HRC cam is the "hop up cam" for the xr motor. Go to service honda and look for the hop up kit. Also do a search on this site and you will find the part # I cannot find the little slip that came with my cam, however the part # is listed on this site many times by many.

Plus the dealer will charge you way to much for that cam. Cheapest is service honda or planet honda

Good Luck

Output-wise, the HRC cam is between the Stage 1 and Stage 2, the OE XR cam is beneath all except the OE TRX400EX cam. I'm not sure which grind of Web you are refering to.

I rechecked with the dealer and it is the HRC cam for an XR.

I have been thinking about the HRC myself. But I run MX only. Will this cam work well with a stock bore? And what about later when I want to go to a 406, or a 416? Will it still work well with those setups as well?

How much did they say it was??

If they say less than $250 they are on crack...http://ricoracing.netfirms.com/Smilies/crackhead.gif

Stock XR400 cam runs around $120

HRC hopup XR400 cam is normally around $275

If they are selling the HRC cam for the XR price, please give me the number so I can order about 6 of them...:eek2:

The answer to ylw400 is YES,. It will work well in all applications of riding and with a stock motor.

I contacted them reguarding that and I was told the only cams they offer for the 400ex are the hotcams stage 1 & 2 and the stock XR400cam... And there's not HRC copy cam at all anymore..

I run the stage 1 and I like it a lot, but if you've got the cheese (I don't), go with the HRC. Nothing works better in a Honda than a Honda part. Those engineers at Honda are pretty smart, ya know.:p

Hey Rico, I just called XR's only and they said that they have the HRC copy cam
XR/TRX400 179.95 and that is is ground to be about like the stag1 hot cam. Is this the HRC hop up cam that you are talking about? He said it was not the stock grind. It dose require a core charge
thou.

This is the part# P/N 02-1020
