I am looking to start racing mx but I need a new quad. I was thinking of a 250r, 400ex, or z400 (can't quite afford a new 450). I would like to buy used and cheap as possible. What do you think? (district racing)

400ex is a good bike, lots of aftermarket parts avaliable, and reliable. :macho :macho :macho

I'd bite the bullet and get a used YFZ450, you'll spend less money in the end. The 400ex is a good machine but you'll spend a lot to get it to perform.

If money is a issue I would say get a pimped out 250r. They are going for cheap right now!

2004 Z-400. pipe, jets, tires, offset wheels, nerfs and a kill switch and your ready. of your racing the B class of above your going to need more than i listed.

I'm kinda worried about the frame on the Z's. Should I be?

I would definately go with a 250r. For the price, you can beat the power. You can get a pretty nice one for 3000-3500 bucks. Ya know with suspension mods and motor work. When buying a 250r, definately check the frame because they are so old. Good luck! Plus they are cheaper to work on the engines than four strokes, but there is more maintenence.

i'd go w/ the either of the 400's.

I am pretty partial to my honda and its treated me pretty well tho.

You should pry be happy w/ either of them.

Go for a 250R man. You can get nice ones cheap, and have limitless amounts of aftermarket parts when you save up some more money after buying. (and just for the fact that its 2-stroke:cool: )

I have a 400EX and a Kawisaki KXF400. I sold my 250R and baught em. The biggest downside to the 400EX is it takes alot of $ to get it to go. I have just a little under 7K in motor work from LRD, it now rails and is untouchable even by YFZ450s but it took alot of motorwork to get it there, it is about to get pulled apart to be stroked to a 460 too :D . It is almost tooooo fast for some of the short track indoor flat track races I race in. If you were not going to have tons of money to dump into it I'd go with the Kawi, my mom has a stock 400EX and my stock Kawi eats it alive.

Right now the 400ex are pretty cheap and with plenty of aftermarket parts. but i would probly go with a z-400 over thew 400ex if you can get them at simailer price. The Z-400 motor has more potainal and probly a worth more in the end. To be both bike are good choice for a beginer. 250r is another good choice if you like 2stroke and don't mind having an older bike.
