Motoman440 was talking with a friend of ours the other day and our friend said he had just bought a CRF450R motocycle carb to put on his 400ex. Anybody out there know of someone who has done this? And if so, what was the result?

First of when did dewey pick up a friend:confused:

I would have to say contact Rocky Ridge Racing with questions reguarding this.. 270-259-9604. Ken is using them and has great things to say. He actually gets more power from them than a FCR 39 or 41. Cost is a little over $300 i believe but he's got the hook up for em. there are a few obstacles when installing one but what task on quad doesn't have problems...:o

He must have quite a "hook up". I priced one through Parts Fish and it was $536!

Service Honda sells them for about $360 if I remember right. I might get one; I kinda like a challenge. :macho

From the pics that I've seen, the bracket the the cables hook up to is a bit taller than the standard FCR. This may mean that teh gas tank may have to be shimmed a little higher. Also, it has a throttle position sensor that the regular does not have. Aside from that, I think that they are the same. I believe that there is a good walk thru of intalling it with pics on Z400Central. They may be installing it on a Z, but the principle is the same.

I hope that somebody who has done it on a 400EX can speak to it here for us....

I have done this mod to my 400EX and have nothing but great things to say about it. I used a '03 CRF carb and jetting was spot on except for a fuel screw adjustment. You will need a 2-3" piece of 2 1/2" I.D. auto exhaust pipe and a small section of radiator hose to adapt to your 400EX air box. The CRF carb is shorter in length as compared to the factory 400EX carb. I used the throttle cable off the Yamaha YFZ 450 . It bolts up perfectly to the 400EX thumb throttle. It looks like it came from the factory that way. Rocky Ridge Racing makes a set of aluminum covers that will replace the hot start and throttle position sensors. They are very clean looking. I must give Kenny(Rocky Ridge) the credit for turning me on to this mod. It was money well spent. The performance increase was definitely felt..

How much did Rocky charge you for the carb?

My relatives own a Honda / Kawasaki franchise. The carb was bought for dealer cost. I just bought the aluminum covers from Rocky Ridge. I believe they were around $30.00. The Yamaha YFZ 450 throttle cable was between $15-$20.00. For some reason the '04 CRF carb is about $35.00 higher than '03 CRF carb. I used the '03 carb and it works well. As stated earlier in this thead you should be able to buy a carb for around $360.00 plus tax. That sounds about right. I hope I have helped..

Hmmm, if I can get a new CRF carb for $360, I know I can get a used 39fcr for the 400ex for that price, probably even less. And not have the install hassles.

Comparing new to new, the CRF carb is a little better deal.

Just my 2 cents
