I was looking for a cam that would be good for duning. All I have right now is a K&N filter and pro circuit t-4 slip-on w/proper jetting. How about the XR cam? what does it do? what other companies are there that offer a good cam for what i need? what are their differences and advantages/disadvantages? any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have a Web 450/451 grind in mine and it runs great. You can put that cam in without any other mods. The 463/9i is actually better for top end power for the dunes, but you gotta get hardened rockers and shortened guides with that one.

Although I have no experience with them, a HotCams stage 2 would also be a good choice for dunes. I dunno if you can drop it in without other mods though.

the cam that i have in my 400ex is the HRC cam. It is the hop up cam for the xr400. It is a little pricee at 277.00 through servicehonda. it is about 125.00 cheeper than a norm honda shop. love mine pwr from bott. to top drop rite in no other parts needed plus it has the decompression lever on the cam. the after market cams dont have that. highley rec. the HRC cam you wont be disapointed. reves higher than a stock cam. workes very good in the dunes.:p

No. The XR cam is barely bigger than the EX cam. Without putting in a high compression piston in at the same time. A decent mid-top end cam is gonna kill you're bottom end.

For the dunes I would highly recommend the hotcams stage 2. Call up C&D racing they will give you a great deal. BUT the stage 2 really wont be to your liking unless you bump up the compression some..If you bore is good buy a standard JE 11:1 piston and have your cylinder honed. If you must keep the stock piston then I would get a stage 1 hotcam.

I'm not sure on the other cam companies out there. I do know that with the Hotcams you don't need to do a core exchange, and you don't need to upgrade your valves, valve springs or rockers. etc. Just drop in and go. Keep in mind if you plan on doing it yourself you will need a press to remove a part off of the cam. I think it was bearing I forget.

not anymore for almost a year now the flange comes casted to the cam all you have to do is bolt up your sprocket and your good to go

Do you have to enlarge the holes on the cam gear so that you can adjust it to degree in the cam?

no, the only reason you would need to do that is if you would want to advance or tard your timing of if you deck the cylinder

I have tried several cams in my400 . and I think the xr 400 cam was the best buy Ialso tried a stage2 hotcam it trashed my timing chain. I have a web cam in my 416 and it does not have the torque to pull a long hill even with a 12/5/1 JE piston.my brother has a WB mid range cam and it lugs down good and has a lot of top end run out.I would go with the xc or the wb mid.

400ex timing chains arent the strongest in the world and dont last long with built motors dont blame it on the hotcam!
