I have a 1996 KDX 200 and a friend that wants to buy it. He has a 400 EX but it needs a new crankshaft. He may trade me the quad plus money for my bike. Approximatley how much would it cost to rebuild the 400EX motor with a new crank, rod, and piston (maybe to a 416cc)? He said it also needs a new airbox. I am gonna really check it out first but I assume that the motor is trash. He said it also fouls plugs so my first guess is that he has the jetting off.

Thanks,
Joey

You can buy a complete used "good" motor for around $1500 ?? I would call around to atv salvage yards and see what they get. Make sure they put it in writing that its a good motor, or at least hear it run.

Call East Coast ATV, we have bought from them and had good experinces with them

Would I be better off having the motor thats in it rebuilt with a stock bottom end and just bore it over to the next size? I may just tell this guy that he can fix it, and then I will trade him.

It all depends on your ability to rebild it. If you can do it then you will probably be looking at about 300-400ish for a crank, 100 for piston kit, 40 for bore, I think gasket kits run in the 80 range, so you will probably be looking in the 700-800 range for parts. Labor is probably going to be a 6 or 7 hour job what a shop would charge you so that could get spendy too.
