are there any good shocks out there under 400$. I just want a little bit of a smoother ride without paying a s*** load of money.

works would be perfect if your not looking for like top of the line shocks. Check ebay you can get them new for well under 400.

i was in the same boat as you a few years back. i couldnt see paying $$$$ for shocks. so i bought works tripple rates with rezzies. i didnt know what to expect when i installed them. at first they felt the same as stock....until i hit my first jumps with them. the landing was much smoother and didnt feel harsh. then when riding in ruff terrain i could go faster with less damage to ME:p after the works ive owned elkas...pep's and axis. ive riden on just about every type of shock you can imagine and ill never ride stock again. i even had the confidence to hit a jump bigger then i ever had the day i installed my works. it aint a 80 footer but for me it might as well been:D my son isnt a photographer but you can get the picture.

ok so going with the works would be a pretty good upgrade over stock. Are they adjustable. Do you order them by rider weight ?

they are only preload adjustable.

you have them custom built to your specs, so yes...your wieght, a-arms, riding stye, etc...
