where is the air/fuel mixture screw on a 03 400ex?
also wondering if my main jet is to big?

The fuel screw is directly in front of the float bowl pointing straight down. It is kinda up inside a little sleeve. 170 main sound a bit big. I think you should probably be more in the 150 range with just a slip on. Usually in the past when I put a K&N in and remove the air box lid I would install a 152 and it was just about perfect. With just a slip on I would think 150 or 148 would be about right.

170 is way too big. with a cam, pipe, air filter and no airbox lid i was runnin a 160 and even that was a little tiny bit rich

Yup, what these guys said. My 416 with cam/full pipe/porting/no lid was running a 170 main, and it was a tad rich. When I just had the full system and no lid I was using a 155 main. You should be in the 150-155 range. This was at 1000ft elevation. If you're at higher elev, 150 or smaller.
