clank in starter

when i go to start my 400, i can jit the button and it sounds like it turns the motor over about two times and then it clanks and keeps trying to turn it over but it clanks. like a starter bendics has gone out of it, but my local honda shop says it dont have a bendics.

this is just a thought but have u checked if your battery has charge?? its some thing to check anyway

sounds like the starter sprag clutch to me. The sound only occurs when the motor is cranking, right? The bad clanking sound is not heard when the motor is running, right? A starter sprag clutch dogs go bad over time and sound strange when the dogs wear funny in the sprag race.
