Hey everyone I have a 1996 KDX200 that I will hopefully have sold tomorrow. I am selling it because I bought it for $1500 and I have an offer for $2000. I am considering getting a quad instead of another dirtbike and I am really stuck between the two. I definitley want a 4 stroke this time around, something around 400cc. I am thinking of an XR400, DRZ400 or maybe a 400EX or something. I should have about $2500-$3000 or so to spend on something. I ride trails, and powerlines here in Alabama. The trails are wide enough for a quad. How do quads do on hillclimbs compared to a dirtbike? My KDX spins the back tire before it stands up on me. Would a quad stand straight up on a hill and toss me off the back or would it spin a little bit and go? I've never had a quad before. The KDX is my first bike and I have had it since August 2003. Im 19, 215lbs, 6' tall.

Peace,
Joey

quads will spin, but u have to lean over the bars a lil..atleast on mine i do...but i think u'd be good on a 400ex.

Would $2500-$3000 be enough to pick up a used but not abused 400EX? Alot of the hills are rutted too but I think it would be ok. Also, I know that an XR400 has about 32hp stock. I also know that the motor in a 400EX is the same so can I assume that a stock 400EX has about 32hp? Also, do these quads accelerate pretty hard? I know I have a lot of questions but I hope you can bear with me. My last one is, even though in riding conditions this doesn't matter... in a straight line drag race, how would a 400EX compare to a 125cc motorcross bike such as a cr125. I just want to know this to get an idea of the power.

Thanks again,
Joey

it would have too be used. look around for deals but keep in mind 400ex doesnt have reverse, 300ex does and + it is cheaper.

the 400ex would be better for hillclimbs even though ive climbed some pretty big hills with my 300.

I only have a slip-on exhaust on my stock 400 and it accelerates hard in my opinion. I can pull wheelies through third gear, first and second all the time, I have to pull up on the bars to get it through third. Fourth and fifth are a little bleh in my opinion though. I still love my 400 to death, you should also be fine on the hillclimbs.

Stock 400EX only has around 27hp. I'm pretty sure that a 125 2stroke would beat a stock 400ex in a straight line. If you could get around 3500 together you could get a nice used 400ex that already has motor work done, or get a good used one without motor work - but with bolt on's for probably around 3k, maybe less. Check the forsale forum on here - there are serveral good deals.

and now it has

AC PROPEGS, RAD taperd carrier and Rad axle nut, tether kill switch, kend klaw MX all around, DID chain, JT sprockets, white brothers air filter

and now it looks like this

I use to have a banshee, it was faster but stock shocks and handeling was TERRIBEL compared to the 400ex. The 400ex is really good quad. If you put money into important things like suspention and a-arms it will be night and day difference. I still think a 400ex is competable with the newer quads out there. just got to be a good rider mentally and physically

Thanks for all the responses. I think I am gonna see how this job goes for about a month or so and see how the money situation is. Then I will make a decision on what I will do. I have thought about putting $2500 down on a new 400ex or a z400 or something and making payments on it to build some credit since I am only 19 and have no credit.

Later,
Joey
