I designed some brake rotors, and have a machine shop to make them it, but i don't knwo what they are made out of  Can anyone tell me what material to make them with? I would appriciate it very much, cause i want to test some new one's out! :D

thanks...

it's just a chunk of stainless

actually, i found out from galpher, and it her 400 series high carbon stainless steel... they use this cause it is very very hard, and doesn't warp under the heat. they lazer cut theirs, but i will be plasma cutting mine, and then finishing them with some other little things..

...oh, and when i'm done i will test them, and if they are good, i will post a picture of them!:macho

if you cut that whole thing out with a plasma torch it is definatly goin to warp :o

Definate warpage!

check out my toys, www.eatonfabricating.com go there and click on the laser for a short video, if ya want some good rotors give me a buzz, we only do bulk though :o

ok...i will check that out, but if i do it, i will maybe have you lazer them out, but i will shave them and stuff. i had my own design, and if they worked out well, and kept some cool temps i was going to see about selling them? Why will they warp with plazma cutter?

Yah, why would they warp if he cut them with a plasma cutter?

they wont warp, anyone who has used one knows that unless it is very thin metal that plasma cutter wont warp it and even then it is very minimal. A torch will warp it.

because of the heat........... plasma would generate alot of heat, but then again, just dawned on me you would probably be fine if ya make a one inch cut wait a min and then make another cut and so forth, we somtimes experience minor warpage on the laser depending on the thickness of the metal and the laser doesn't generate nowhere near as much heat as a plasma would since it's such a fine and quick cut, with the plasma your moving much much slower and you have alot thicker cut so your goin to get bout 5 times more heat

with the plazma cutter i would be using is not a small or slow one. I program in what i need, and it does it just like the lazer, but it will leave a little bit of a rough surface, so i would have to finish it. Then afterwards i would shave out some shaps ina machine shop, but i dunno..

there wont be near enough heat cutting metal the thickness of a rotor to warp it, especially if it a mechanically run cutter that runs at a steady speed.

Some companys use a softer lower carbon steel to get better braking. i would say you would be better off buy the aftermarket. or Atleast i would go with stainless steel.

dave, i had aaron check, and he found that braking, galpher, and some others, like most, use 400 series high carbon stainless steel! But i think i will call and talk to someone that does this stuff, and find out from them. Then if i use a diff. material, i will test them at the farm, where no one can get hurt first..
