you could just run a 416 kit and install it yourself. you can get the piston (under 10.8:1 compression if you don't want to run race gas), cam, gaskets and boring for under $400 if you install it yourself. just get an owners manual and our pretty much set.

the porting would not affect the octane fuel you need to run. you wouldn't need to port it out. you can but it isn't required. i actually didn't port my head and the bike really really opened up from stock. premium fuel at the pump will be fine given you run the 10.8:1 or lower. i run premium on 10.8 and the bike runs good. i haven't rode the bike in the summer yet though.

I'm happy with the 416 I just did......did all the work myself........
HotCams stage 2... $130
JE 11:1 (416) $130
Swain Tech piston coating (optional) $ 40
Cometic Gaskets $40
O-Rings from Honda for timing cover and crank cover $10
Machine shop bore $40

all prices are close as I'm going on memory

This thing rocks go 416 call C&D Racing they'll set you up

I ride trails and fire roads, will I notice a power gain by just putting in a stage 1 hotcam and staying with the stock piston? or do I need put in a higher comp. piston (416) to feel any power gain.....

You will need to put a higher comp. piston in it to see real power gains. If you're riding on fire roads and open trail alot, go with the stage 2. To save on boring you could just put a high comp. 400 standard bore, depending on how well your cylinder looks.
