i was out trail riding today on my 400ex and i let the clutch out to go into 3 gear and i heard a noise come by my engine. my clutch lever just goes back in forth when i put the clutch in like its not doing anything. on the right side where the clutch cable goes into the engine the piece doesnt fell like it is doing anything. is this a major problem. i hope this makes some sense. any help is aprreciated.

Sunds like the lifter pin is broke. Mine has done it once it isnt hard to fix. Need to take the side case off to get to it though.

alright, i pulled the side case off. there is that plate with i think 5 bolts with springs that hold the clutch all together. the lifter pin will move in when i push it in and it will stay there and not come back out. is that the problem. i hope this makes sense.

sounds like your problem...I think it should go in & that spring back out :(

what did you find out, I am having the same problems ?
the pin looks good, new fibers and spacers.
cable is good.
clutch wont engage until cable is adjusted all the way out and sitting on the outside of the adjuster itself?
Help please.

from the look of that link its looks good, as long as the part on the end is round like a disk.

thats what I thought any other ideas, I guess my brother didnt put the new cable on yet, but I just can believe the cable be stretched that far. I have it all the way adjusted out and have the cable riding on the end of the adjusted just to get the clutch to work.
ANY other ideas ????

I know where the pin goes in to the basket, does it just spin freely?? or does it grab onto something ??
it has 2 flats that look like it should go into something but I cant see anything ?

yes the lifter pin spins around on the bearing in the outer presure plate. maybe u can try re routin ur cable elsewhere where it comes up by the steerin stem. i know it sounds weird, but it does make a difference.

i had the same problem..is this the motion pro cable? my stock cable snapped after it was working fine so I bought a motion pro & the cable was long...I had to use spacers to get the cable to be short enought to work. this was also the right cable b/c it had the 400ex sticker on it from dennis kirk. Anyways, I then changed out my clutch & plates & springs & it still did same thing so I got another stock OEM cable & sure enough, it worked fine. good luck & tell me what you find out wrong please ;)

i used a motion pro, and yes it seemed kinda long. but once i rerouted it, it fits pretty snug now. its weird that it works like that, but hey if it works y not use it that way.

Its working, what I did was change the adjuster knob on the bars.
the other threads were too short. Still waiting for new cable to come it, still not in yet, but so far its working.
