I arrived first thing this morning after flying into Jacksonville Airport last night. The weather is suppose to be perfect all weekend, and the racing should be great!

Admin

There were three XC races scheduled today. The Youth raced first at about 10:00AM, the B&C Class, Age Classes raced for 1.5 hours at around 12PM, and the Pro & A races went off at 2PM for 2 hours.

The Sky was Partly Cloudy with Temps in the Upper 70's. This was a great chance for the better from home.

I was extremely excited that race track and all I could think about was getting the chance to race again at a great facility in Florida. I didn't have anything with me and I figured that I would just spend another weekend watching :(

After walking around first thing in the morning, I started talking with Bill Naber about EXriders.com. He was showing me his YFZ and mentioned he had a Z400 in his trailer. I asked if anyone was going to race it, and he said "No." I mentioned that I would really wanted to race, and he kindly offered that I could race his quad. I was Stunned! That was totally not expected, and I was really excited, but he didn't have any spare gear. I quickly thought of well, but I decided to ask some of my fellow XC racers and supporting companies to see if they could help me out.

Again, Everyone was very willing to help me get a chance to race. I gathered all my gear in no time.

Matt Smiley let me use his Boots, Chris Borich gave me his Helmet, Mike Penland set me up with some race gear, Maxxis (Thad) gave me a new set of Gloves, and Adapt, set me up with Googles.

In less than 1 hour, I went from nothing to a full race setup. Even though Registration was closed the great staff at the ATV Olympics (Kyle Meyers) aloud me to signup because of what I did to get a chance to race. I rushed to the riders meeting to get ready to race the 30+. :D

The Z400 was basically stock expect some Ohlins Shocks which were not setup at all for me, but I didn't care!

Unfortunately though, I missed the Youth race trying to get prepared to race myself, but I will be getting pictures of them from the MX & TT.

I was still running 2nd, but I was really starting to get fatiqued from not eating or drinking much before the race. Not riding for a couple of months didn't help either. I figured Traci was going to be passing me soon.

I personally believe the racer accounts for 75% in XC racing. In MX, I think it is closer to 50%. TT, I think actually the Quad is 60% because proper setup is so important along with Power.

Gimmie a call when your done to. After watching a lot of XC races it makes you realize how little the horsepower factor means. You're still seeing quads that are admittedly down on horsepower still leading events. It's more about reliability, consistency and rider skill. Watch the starting gate--you'd assume that every YFZ would be at the front followed by Z/KFX's who, in return, are followed by 400EX's but that's not the case.

Like always Harlen, great race coverage!! Good job on the finish. One thing I am disappointed about, how come you didn't slap a EXRiders.com sticker on that borrowed Z when nobody was looking...lmfao:D

Admin

I had a very long day, and I am formating the XC Pro & A Pictures tonight, but I need to be at the track tomorrow at 7AM to prepare the TT racing. John Natalie Jr & I have a lot of work to do to prepare.

Also, I took some awesome MX Pictures today and my legs and arms feel like jelly after racing and running around taking pictures. The ATV Olympics has been an Incredible experience, and I want to post as much details as possible about the races, so It will probably take me several nights to get anything posted, but the wait will be well worth it :D.

Thanks again everyone for all your support! Amazing, I am currently in 1st Place Overall after XC & MX racing. Today I raced an East Coast YFZ450. It is John Natalie's National Quad, and it was Awesome. I will bring you more details tomorrow night. I raced and John Natalie took some awesome pictures of me. He is as good with a camera as he is on a quad :D

I am totally exhausted. I hope 800mg of Ibuphoren will allow me to walk tomorrow. Hopefully, I will do well enough tomorrow to win the overall for all three days. It will be a stretch because I have never raced a TT race before and most of the 30+ class racer are top notch and retired Pros. They are all awesome guys!

Night Guys, Wish me Luck! I will need it :)

The #15 (Z-400) that got the #1 positon in XC is my son and I want everyone to know that he won the 1st overall Olympiad at the 2004 ATV Olympics. He as well as Jeremiah Jones are "both" Kentucky boys and are sponsored by JPMX.
A big thanks to James Perry of JPMX who took care of Tommy after he had a "little" (kah-blooey) motor problem after the XC race. James let him ride his XC bike (400 EX) so he could complete the MX and TT portion of the Olympiad. Couldn't have done it without him. We'll see everyone at the GNC's.

The track was plenty wide for passing in plenty of field sections and the mx track. I was in 1st overall and I wasn't going to move over for anyone in that position. Tommy #15 had no problem passing Traci and I in the race, so there were plenty of places to pass:rolleyes:

I had a great time getting to race with Traci, and I look forward to racing with her in the GNCC:D

Sorry, to keep you guys waiting for all the pictures and race reports:(

I took around 1,500 pictures this weekend, and there are about 20 classes of races, and I want to cover them all.

I almost have all the MX pictures seperated into groups, and I plan to have them up tonight with race reports.

I will get the TT up in a couple of Days, and I will have the XC Pro Up Last, which probably won't be until after the Banquet.

My response to seatec:

Yes, I raced John's EAST COAST ATV, Gibson, Axis, and Maxxis YFZ450 and I must say that it was awesome. His suspension was a little soft for me on the MX, but by the 2nd Moto, I was doing all almost all of the jumps on the track with it. The power and handling were great.

It felt small when I sat on it, but once I got on the track, I was fine. All and all, I actually enjoyed racing the YFZ. I really don't have anything negative to say about it, but again I was racing National Quad and not a stock YFZ.

omg the xc race this weekend had to be the hards race of my life. for me it didn't matter what quad you race. the track just beat you up. the whole woods sections was all sand the got very whoop and rutted out. it kinda like running southwick with trees every where. the woods were pretty tight. all of the mx though were running a mx set up. the more than line in some of the woods so you could get a round. the rest of the track was really wide. plenty of passing. and the mx track real fast.

the track tore everybodys hads up.I have a couple of big blisters my hands. but john nataile hands almost had no skin on them. the rest of the poeple i know who race had some sort of bandage on there hand.

you use you ex for xc right? also how did you do on the yfz? and were you running stock suspension on it? and what mods are you going to get for the NEATVMX series next year? and awesome job in FLORIDA!!!!!

i got 4th for the expert xc and race ithe yfz. not bad for my first race xc race and my first race not in novice. its pretty much stock. theres was a lot of fast mx guys racing the xc but alot of them Dnf or tired them self out. you really had to pace yourself and ride smart. i ended up race the TT race with a completely stock 400ex. I almost got lapped.

the tranny went in the mx and then i broke the swingarm in the tt practice.

Jones is super fast. I can't beleive how fast this guys is. i tryed to keep up to him in the woods and all i did was tire my self out. i watch him rail tree though because he was like 50" wide.It didn't really slow him down. i think the only guy that could complete with him this weekend john nitaile. But jones would pull a good start and walk away in every race and lead with a about half a lap on every body. jones and walsh where battling pretty good in the woods

Harlen, thanx for the assesment on the YFZ. I know what you mean about the YFZ feeling small. I am 6'4". You kind of feel "on top" of the bike at first but the feeling wears off. Glad you liked it.

PS, we might head out to the Landing this weekend depending on how friggin cold it gets. Just to let you know if you have time.
If you can make it you can show us how its done and make us feel even more insignificant.

This weekend, I am heading to the GNCC Banquet, so no riding for now.

Also, Jhughes, The ProAm and Pro started on the same row. I will be posting the XC Pro Race after I finish the MX & TT.

Im only one person.

There was a little contravercy. Well John nitaile was leading most of the race but JJ passed him on the last lap in the motor cross track. but i geuss Jjones went to the pits for two tires and jump back on the track. well its takes a little time to change two tires. some were wondering how Jjones could catch back up to John nitiale. Some thought that jjones was a lap down, when he finished. It possible he could of be a lap down. the top pros were talking about 10mins a lap. I could easly see taking 10min s to change two tires.

MrP

Actually Jones only had one flat tire, and it took five minutes to change. At Jones speed it is possible to catch anyone.

Sick0
01-07-2004, 07:45 PM
i know at jones speed it possible. but john nitaile is no joke. i was racing in the A class which was run with the pro, and i can tell right now the j-jones the fast guy on the track hands down.

seatec
01-08-2004, 10:51 AM
how where the two in relation to eachother before the tire change took place? where they close in speed? if so, then natalie would have to have a minor set back also to have lost 5 minutes of time. just a logical deduction. Or is it possible to be neck on neck and then fall 5 minutes of the pace in a 10 minute loop?

yup...

I saw Jones racing the pro quad class at Casey IL last June, dude is SICK! HE had at least a half a lap on EVERYBODY! He looked like a man racing a bunch of 8 yr old boys, incredible...

Were the heck was Borich and Smiley during all this flat tire changing and fighting for the lead with Natalie on the XC track.

I know JJ is fast but so are Borich and Smiliy. Did they get stuck, have flats, make a wrong turn?? If they ran the race from start to finish and just made a normal gas stop then something is not right:confused:

Somebody call 1 of those guys and find out...:D

Ok, I did! I will not go into a lot of details because I don't want to get a lot of crap started. JJ was in 4-5th place a couple of laps before half way when he had a right front flat. He change the tire WITHOUT going a lap down and only loseing one spot. He just pulled out all the stops and made up the time and past the leaders mostly on the MX section.

now that makes sense, if he changed his tire with half the race left it is possible for him to catch the leaders. but i dont think that it is possible to be five minutes down and catch them in one lap.:)

all I know for sure is I had 2 minutes on second place borich by the forth lap and was pulling by 30 to 35 seconds a lap. Then about 3 laps to go my hands got pretty sore so I slowed about a minute to 2 minutes per lap for the last three laps. It was a great race and JJ cought me in the woods the last lap, I had to let him go by cause I couldnt hold on. But he definately was flyin! He is always fast! But I think I have something for him in 2004! THANKS TO :EAST COAST ATV (best quads ever built)

Sick0- I raced the A class also, got second in it. I definately wasnt saying John is a joke. I was just saying at Jones speed it was possible. I dont think he would have caught John if Johns hand wouldnt have gotten so bad though. I just think its awesome that mx racers took 1st and 2nd.

Borich and Smiley pitted quite a few times each, tuning and what not.
