i have this ingrained fear of steep hills that are long. I am fearfull for my quad , not myself. I have visions of my quad tumbling down the hill disintegrating.

wow. mostly all the hills i climb they are made by nature except like the strip jobs and mining places. a lot of the hills that i climb are also so short and steep. they ain't long. well there are some hills around here are are steep and long. but most of them are short and steep. and some are long but not real steep but some are ruff and its fun.

I love to hillclimb.I really like to hill climb on my 400ex.So far one I have failed once on it.My 300ex on the hand has failed many times.

This past weekend I was down at st joe state park in missouri.Way back in the woods there is some pretty good hillclimbs. So I got a pretty good run at it.But you had to dodge tree's.I was in 2nd and as soon as I let off the gas my bike died.(for some reason I kill my 400ex way more than any other bike I have had)So now I half way up a hill you can't even walk up.I have tree's all around me.And when you get off the bike basicly your going to slide down the hill.I tried turning the bike around by using a tree to keep me from sliding. But it didn't work.

So I did the only thing I could do.I let the bike roll backwards down the hill and flipped over backwards. It bent my bars a little bit.At the bottom of the hill there was a biggo peice of back plastic for a yellow 400ex right next to where my bike was.I guess I wasn't the only one that failed.Next time we go down there I am going to make it though.

umm... people that don't like seeing their prized possessions tumbling back down the hill? It wasn't a rhetorical question was it? You really wanted an answer? I only hill climb because if rider11x goes up it, then I have to. Do I like it? Nope. Do I feel a sense of accomplishment when I make it up? Sort of. Better than the alternative... But he won't follow me over a 30 foot jump... it's all in what we like to do. Yes, I have time to kill, that's why I'm blabbing on senselessly... I'll stop now...

i think hill climbing is the funnest thing. look up the thread called "rubber side up" in trail tales forum by o3le if you want to see why he doesnt hill climb anymore. the funnest hill climbing is at the sand dunes, cuase if you roll your quad it wont be as bad for you or the quad.

well hill climbing might be dangerours but it runs through my vain's. it gets me going every time i do it. if i do roll my 4 wheeler and don't make the kill and brake something on my 4 wheeler. it makes me want to get up it more. if i don't make it i will do it till get it. even if i do have a part time job and have to wait to make money and buy parts i brake. i will do it all my life and never stop.

yeah, I haev a little too much money tied up in the LT to watch it tumble back down... I've watched many of my quads do that, I got quite good at getting outta the way! :p There was actually one I did last year that rider11x didn't want to do first... not real big, just loose ash pile, and I wanted to see what the LRD motor would do on a hill climb. It was quite satisfying flying up it, then watching rider11x expression go to oh sh*t, now I gotta do it! hehe... Only one I know he wouldn't do was a short climb, but it had rocks sticking out near the top, and when you come over the top, you had about ten feet to stop! I flew up it, jumped the rocks, came over the top airborne, soon as I landed stomped the brakes sliding it sideways to a stop. Looking calmly at him I said "Your turn"! He said no f*cking way!! Meanwhile my heart was pounding! :eek2:

i think in hill climb contests they should have like a winch tied to the front bumper that rolls up as you go up but doesnt pull on the quad any, just as insurance

I dont think they have a winch that can pull fast enough, it wouldnt work, think of a crotchrocket motor in a quad frame with a winch trying to pull all of the "rope" in as that thing comes screamin at 100

i couldnt be a hill climber because if my quad starts flippin....imma cry like a baby...i watched my friend try and attempt a snowy hill climb which is hella steep no 1 can barly make it up it in the dry weather...much less snow...i warned him he was like stfu im going up this hilll....well he got to the top and got his front wheels on flat land...then the bike started spinning...it dug down past the snow and caught dirt....slung the bike back down the hill, smashed his head lights, his plastic, and bent his steering stem....i think he wanted me to grab the frontend of the bike when it got to the top....but if it started to flip back...my arse wont going along with it.....but being an idiot doesnt pay off...hill climbing and snow or mud dont mix....OIL and Water

thtas all i use to do until i discovered the sand. i went out thursday w/ my friends. one has a 400 & the other a blaster they were trying to make it up a hill only 400's, preds, & shees make it up. i made it up 3 times. i started way back & hit the hill 4th pin. ill get a pic of it next time i go out. the last time i went up i missed a shift at the top. i made it back down the hill, only after falling & flipping the quad a couple of times down the hill . not alot of damage to the quad, some scratched plasrics & broken spirit.

When I was at St. Joes the end of Oct. I climbed a little hill that had most of a 400EX plastic at the bottom. Maybe it was the same hill. There were several trees like you are talking. It was about 45-50 feet tall. Approx 60degree angle. I would not have attempted it on my R because it was kinda rough, but my Rancher climbes soooooo much better. Something about a 4X4 utility on hills that can't be beat.

Every time I post in a hillclimb thread some dumb @$$ flames me about saying utilities climb better. To anyone even thinking that a sport quad climbs better all I have to say is try hills on a 4X4 Ranche 1 time and you will undestand, and will not be as ignorant about what you say climbs better anymore.

i can't wait till i get some more pics. i will put them all on here and there pretty hard core. by looking at all the pictures every one else posted. they look so easy for some reason but i don't because i never tryed them. the reason i say this is because the hills that i climb and my brother there so hard because you don't get a big run for the big ones and some you do. most of the hills that we climb are old strip jobs. the reason it so hard out here pennsylvania to get a run for a long hill is because of all the trees. but all the trees are good for cross country racing in the woods. hills is like the best thing ever. if i show you these pictures. you will now what i mean. a lot of the hills we climb are shell rock amd it also makes it hard.

hey if a utility 4 wheeler is better at climbing and lets say it does flip just this one time and it rolls on to you. your gonna be in a lot of pain. and also if it is pined on you. you won't be able to get that thing off because it is so heavy. so that is more dangours. and lets say if a sport 4 wheeler like a z400 is on yea. your gonna a better chance of getting that off you.

one other thing. i got a warrior and i mostly made it for power. and the good thing about it is. the front end on a warrior is real heavy. so thats one reason i picked my warrior.

thank you bye

i usually wouldnt just sit on the quad if it rolled over, and have you ever used a utility to climb with?

yea i have hill climb with a utility 4 wheeler and they work great for it to i am just saying its more dangours doing it with one. and it scared me the first time i did it with my uncles. and i mostly never did any more hill climbing with it after that. and my uncle wasn't to happy with me after that happened but he still lets me ride it when i am there.

so that is one reason i got a warrior. because the front end is heavy on them and they are good for hill climbing like mine.

when i get my pictures of my 4 wheeler on here one day. you will see how much money i put in to it. and what ever it was like when i first got it. and put a little money into it. then i kept and kept puting more into it untill i saw the new 450r so i am gonna sell mine for at least $4000 ........or $3000 if i want to sell it fast

thanks bye

I learned very young how to get the F### ot of the way hen they take a tumble. If you do not know how to get out of the way you have NO BUSINESS TRYING TO CLIMB. Occasionaly there will be a time that you can not get out of the way, but 99% of the time IF you are smart you can get out of the way.

usually when i am hill climbing i put on my 12 tooth sprocket and i found a 17 tooth sprocket on ebay and got one of those for dragin

and there another thing i change is my tires. i put my 18 inchers on hill climbing and my 22 inchers on for dragin. but with that 17 tooth sprocket i got it works great if you got a lot of power coming out of your warrior. but if you put it on a stock warrior the and you put it up against a stock warrior. you will lose because you got to have lots of power.

these are just little things you can do to make your 4 wheeler or a draginster

I'm located in CT. For sandhills and the like I use my Raptor, for every other hill my Bombardier Traxxter will rule. It has AWD and is unstoppable in hardpack hillclimbing. My 300ex was fun but I outgrew it quickly, especially since my first quad was a Warrior, which is a much better climber (front end weighs a ton). The Raptor needs to be kissed on the front bumper when climbing, otherwise you are going over backwards. The power on a Raptor is unbelievable :)

see he even thinks the warriors front ends are heavy. i know that because i got one snd it has lots of power with it. so that helps me out with my hill climbing

i have been to Iron Vally to race just for the fun of it but i like cross country racing better. but i have been to rochester mills and marion center. but i have been out there only a few times. i mostly go to rossiter, dora, around punxsy, brookville, or any place i can get to.

i live out side of punxsy. i won't probably won't go to rochester mills or marion center because it is winter and i don't really go that far in the winter. or lest there are a lot of people riding then i will. but i got to put my new cluch kit in to my 4 wheeler because the last one sliped on my so i got some new stuff for it.

i am not sure yet if i am gonna sell my 4 wheeler or trade in on one of the new 450r's. so it probably won't be close till summer until i start to ride with one of the new 450r's. becuase if i order one. i will probably have to wait a while till like the end of spring to get it.

so if you want to say something to me post a reply on here.

But , the thrill of climbing a hill for the first time , or a really tough hill, or better yet , a hill nobody else has ever climbed is sooo great!
not to mention the thrill ofclimbing a hill that you have seen people fail to climb is cool also.

Sure sometimes you pay for the play , but normally It is not so bad.
But them there was a goof on big murph......... right marc?

NO , I am the guy that made it , and turned around at the top and started down , dropped a front tire into the rut , and then rolled it all the way down!
One stupid little error after success!
It is still a little splinter in my pride!
Now , every time I climb murph , it is like revenge!
Real sweet!

And if I remember correctly, that was the second time you went up it! You had it stopped when it turned on it's side, I started to run to help you when it took off and I said oh chit! It looked nasty, but at least you were ok. I told marc if I hadn't just discovered a crack in the frame of my LT, I would've tried it... yeah right! :p
