Ok, I have a basically stock 400ex with the mods listed below...looking to buy around $500 worth of parts

-Rear razr 2s 20"
-Front 22" holeshot XCRs on .190 aluminum rims
-AC heavy duty rear skidplate
-Renthal bars
-DID x-ring chain

I'm thinking AC bumper and fully chassis skidplate...any other suggestions? I'd rather do the handling mods first (suspension) before workin on the motor and exhaust. I heard the ideal front end setup is +1 a-arms with 4:1 offset rims, is this long travel? or do most people use standard travel?

I'd probably be doing the novice or amature class for a few races.

thanks in advance

I'd try and find some stock rims for the fronts or get some race rings welded in.

yea I have stock front tires and rims that are in good condition

Get the PRM skid plates. My AC were trash after a few local XC races. Get the .190 full chassis, and new Z-plate for the rear. Also I would keep the stock rims over the .190 because they have the outer lip, stronger then the .190.

The ideal setup is the +1 arms with 4+1 wheels. Many guys have converted to using the LT setup that way, and love it. A lot of guys run the Houser +1 arms with either Douglas or Hiper beadlock fronts.

Ok i already have skids and a pipe, is a stearing dampner an important cross country mod?

A Denton stabilizer is all most a must for Woods Racing. I know I've hit some stumps in 4th gear, with out the stabilizer who knows what might have happened.

ok heres the list so far...what do you guys think?

-PRM or Pro-tech full body skid
-AC bumper
-Gibson steering stabilizer (same as denton but i can get cheaper)

ok now that the basic bolt ons are squared away now onto suspension

with stock a-arms what would you guys go with? I would go long travel I just dont have enough money right now.

how would a rebuild rear by Quad Shop and Elka triple rate fronts sound? I know the rebuilds $325ish but how much are the fronts for like piggy backs and comp adjust?

I think elka triple rates comp and rebound ajust are some wheres around 800 or so.

I have the rear rebuild and Elka ssd/comp adjust fronts and they work good. I like them a lot. I'm sure the LT would be better, of course. I have thought about sending them to Santo to be setup for me, which would help a lot.

ok change of plans...lol

I now decided to use my MX quad instead of starting over from the ground up

I already have long travel shocks (PEP) and so all i'll need is +1 long travel a-arms...any suggestions? What do you guys see most?

Also with my lonestar axle adjusted down to +1.5" i'll be ok right?

You decide to quit MX racing?

As said in the other post, you can check with Arens, but Houser has a +1 arm, Burgard I believe does, and others.

no I'm still doin plenty of MX races

heres my 2 choices for an XC quad
1. use a basically stock 400ex and slap some elkas all around on it
2. use my MX quad and put on the XC stuff when theres an XC race

my mx quad is practically fully built and the stock quad is well, stock

i think i'm going to go with option one like i originally planned because it will just end up being to much of a hassle

I'm most likely going to buy some triple rate front Elkas and get the rear rebuilt..shouldnt be to bad of a setup

muff

I was talking to pappy about XC front end setups and he said long travels arent really that common so I'll stick with the standard travel for XC and save some dough

Nice tires, i have been giving those razar 2's some serious thought lately. Those are 20's right? How much and where did you get them?

muff
12-29-2003, 06:47 PM
yea those are 20s but their a little shorter than stock 20s

I got them from Extreme ATVs in Norwich, CT http://muff.atvmx.com/extreme
retail is $125 each but I spend a lot of money there so I got them for $160 for both

the other cheapest place is C&D

the other cheapest place is C&D WHo in their right mind would spend $125 per tire, most places are around $75 for the razr 2's, and even that is kinda rediculous.

I was just stating the retail price....even at $160 for the pair Extreme only made $4 on the deal...it may be a lot, but the next time I buy an XC tire I know what I'm gettin (razr 2) its the toughest tire I've ever run and with nobbies like these it'd probably last a year from just riding on the road

dont critize until you use them first...what XC tires are you running?

muff
12-29-2003, 09:36 PM

Those things have some nasty side bite and nasty bite period. I love them on my dads 400.

Are you still interested in those tire balls?

Doibugu2
12-30-2003, 02:10 PM
I think with a mostly stock quad with suspension you should do okay.

My opinion GNCC races is about 90% endurance for us beginners. For the 2 races I've raced I didn't feel my stock engine couldn't keep up. My body was the one that couldn't keep up.

Dave400ex
12-30-2003, 03:11 PM
Doibugu2 I couldn't agree more. I find myself wanting a YFZ, but honestly the 400 still has a lot to offer. With Woods racing, it's mostly the rider being able to ride hard for the whole race.

yea your right on that one, pappy told me to do a lot of cardio and running and stuff like that....I'll be out runnin my arse off tomorrow

I might run tire balls, it just all depends on how much they are...

Dave400ex
12-30-2003, 08:23 PM
I think those Tire Balls are around $180 a tire or more!
