When I get my new 2002 300ex you well know that would be a big down size in engine, 350 warrior to a 300EX, but its an 87 warrior that gets beat by a recon (i think its the air filter) so really it isn't.
i know i won't leave it stock for long, and since the 300 is more upgradable than than warrior (you need a great $$$ pipe on one to get any good power gains, its not ment for racing, its ment for trails and such, only has 2 valves, and most importantly, it gets beat by the 300 in the shootouts in everything except top speed), and its a honda. i what it to beat or keep up with a stock 400ex, heres a list of what i'ma do to it (in the order ill get them)
tell me if it would meet or beat a 400 and if not what would be good instead

White Brothers E-series pro meg with header pipe, K&N air filter (with filter cover drilled or off), stage II jet kit.
rev limiter modification (if worth it)
sproket change (smaller rear)
renthals
works front shocks
bore out to 330 (may not get this far... )

I think the only way to keep up with a 400 is to get the 330kit. But with all that money you put in it, you might want to get a 400, unless your just trail riding and like the idea of reverse, like me.

i dunno, i mean check out my modds,(my signiture down below, don't feel like written it all) but my 2002 300, beat a 2002, 1999, 400's, (both stock), untill i hit mid fourth, cause then where neck and neck, after that he walks away, i run 5 disks on my pipe and stock tires. just to make sure, we switched quads and the 300 beat it. i even had someother people ride and 300 won again. so i thoought maybe it was cause my stockers hooked up, when he just spun his tires, so we went to the road. and i won again. these 400's are in awsome shape too, one (2002) is only a month older than mine
???????sweet!!!!!!!!

i have heard of the same results with other riders, who have similar modds. the 400 only has 25 horses vs the 300's 18, then put on modds and watch

The 400 has 26 hp at the wheels and the 300 has 18 hp but it only has 13hp at the wheels

The way I see it, you should just get a 400ex. By the time you put all that money into a 300, we're talking around $2G's, you still wont handle as well as a 400 and your quad will be a lot less reliable. Get a 400 and save yourself a lot of trouble. It will be worth it. Unless of course reverse is very important to you. But, a 400 is not bad to push around if you have too.

yeah, listen to these guys. the 300ex is a cool bike, but I wouldn't do much more than a pipe, jets, cam, and gear ratios. if the conditions are right for it, you could get a high flow filter. I opened the airbox up, but I still use the stock foamy filter (I ride in sand and dusty conditions). if you get any deeper than that your lookin at some serious bread.
unless you absolutly love the 300ex and insist on upgrading, then go for it. but, be prepaired to pay.

If you plan on moding the 300ex alot just get the 400ex. It will always be better. The mods you listed will not make it beat a 400ex.

first of all, don't get the white bros. if u want a good pipe, get a big gun or pro circuit or yoshimura. second of all, the 330 is not the only way to beat a 400. just the 330 over the 282 stock cc will only give you 1/6 % more power. You will get much more power by getting a large cam, high compression piston, porting and polishing it, and putting in hardened rockers and stronger valve springs. then get the 330 and it will pay off.

Yeah, I'll probably just stick with the pipe jet and filter, i never really need it to beat a 400 as long as its faster than my warrior (47!). but with those mods, would it beat a stock warrior (57mph)?

and if the 300 doesn't beat the 400 or warrior how fast would the pipe, jet air box K&N, maybe a smaller rear sprocket make it?

stock 300 - 52; with all that it should put at least 8 mph on it. shouldn't it?

o yeah and i dont want a 400, i need reverse, and ill skip it (go from 300 to 650) anyway (get 300 keep for a year or so, get the 650 EX or if it sucks, the 250R or 400)
