I changed my oil last night in my 400ex and I drained the resivore and the engine and took the filter out. I put all of the plugs back in and I put 2 quatrs of amsoil 10w-40 synthetic and it was to about the half way point on the dipstick after i ran it for a little bit. There are no leaks and i have checked it a few times since then and it is low so i added more to it to put it to the full mark. Will this hurt it there is probley about 2 and 1/2 quarts in it

I have always put 2 quarts in mine, and it goes half way up. Seems to be fine:)

I wouldn't put anymore than 2 in. Mine never took more than 2 until I did the FST cooler, now it's 2 and 1/2

the manual calls for 1.9 quarts i believe. right in the middle of the dipstick is exactly where you want the oil level. your good.

i read you are supposed to let bike idle for a few minutes after warmed up,shut it off.wait 30ish seconds,ck oil level. if it is in the cross hatch you are good if not you are bad.i prefer to run mine at the upper level.if it takes 2 1/2 quarts to get there id say go with it.you do not want to run overfilled.also it is a good idea to start bike after pouring 1and a half quarts to prevent oil overflowing out of the tank.

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DIPSTICK? I always put 2 quarts and the oil stops there those little lines stop! is that too much? the manual says 1.9 so i just buy 2 quarts and fill it up!

I tend to keep mine about the 3/4 mark from the top of the hash marks on the stick.

What i do is i ddrain the oil. Then I put 1 quart of 15w50 mobil 1. Let the bike idle so it gets into the engine then i turn it off, and put the rest in and then let it run again untill its all in the motor :)

after engine disassembly they say to fill it up with 2.3 quarts. so it actually does hold more than 1.9 quarts. with a filter change, i am not usually up to the full like when i add a full two quarts. let the engine idle for a little bit and then check the oil. do not skrew the dipstick back in when checking the level of the oil. just stick it in the tank and pull it back out.
