I have a stock 400ex with a slip on Big Gun. Can I put in a stage 1 hot cam?

yeah i agree. you could put any cam you wanted in, but it may not run like you prefer. you will lose bottom end power without adding a high compression piston at the same time. the stage 2 is really not designed for a stock bike. if you are planning on putting a piston in a little later, i would suggest the stage 2 for open areas. if you don't want to put a piston in, i would get the stage 1. the stage 1 even works good with a higher compression piston. this will give you more low end and still a good gain up top. it just won't open up in the upper gears quite like the stage 2 will.

I have a stock 99 400 ex that I put a stage 1 hot cam in about 1 yr ago. You would not believe the increase in power that the cam gave that 400. I went from running a 14 t counter sprocket back to a 15 and it pulled like the 14. I recently let my friend borrow the 400 to race XC and he complimented on it all the way home "it kept pulling as long as I held the gas down on the hills" he was also surprised that he had to up shift while climbing some of the hills. For the money and ease it is well worth it.

The 400ex with a slip on has good bottom end. I hill climb a lot and my 400 does not come short of bottom end. When I hit top end in the open is where I get killed.
I am having a problem with my decompressor on my cam, so I want to change it out. As of right know I am working on my suspension before I work on my motor. I believe in building up my suspension before my motor.
I am going to go to a 416 kit.
Ah Hell I am just going to do it. I spoke with C&D got prices for the piston 10.5.1 & Stage two cam. Not that much!!! I will start with the 416 later I will up grade.. GO BIG
Will my stock clutch basket handle the 416kit?

yes it can handle it...but u do kno if u dont go 416 right now then u will have to buy a whole new piston when u do...its not that much to do a 416 bore either...only about $35-$60 and the piston is 87mm and the same amount of money...you might as well go 416 now so u dont have to waste ur money on a whole new piston when u do
