Ok I got a 250r. The guy said it was a 88, but when I went through and redone the motor I found that the piston was an 86 piston. What are the difference in the years in the 250r. Are the frames the same, suspension the same, and any other differences that you all would know

did it have a spacer plate? Does the cylinder have bridges in the exhaust and intake? the frames are different, the rear motor mounts are on the frame on the 88/89 frames, the pegs mount on the frame and don't have a bolt on mounts. 88/89 have a aluminum swingarm, stock wheels are silver not gold, 88/89's have the headlight in the plastic, there are more differences, this should lead you in the right direction.

those are bascally the main things to look for...

you can also tell if the bike is truley an 86 by the motor mounts.
on the frame, there are 2 little knubs the bolts go through to mount the motor mount. on 87-89 it is a single peaice of metal strait across which each bolt goes through to mount the motor mount...

(hard to explain, but if you see it in front of you, you'd understand)

also, look for a year sticker located on the frame rail, right side of the radiator on the upper frame rail (if your looking from the front of the bike) most of the time the stickers are ripped off or powdercoated over (my 86 had the sticker on there when i got it.

according to all that it is an 88, but it must have a 86 motor or crank. When you put an 88 piston in it, it hits the crank. The 86 piston has the wristpin in a lower spot, giving it less of a skirt on the cylinder, therefore the piston will not hit the crank.

is it a short or long rod? it sounds to me like an 86 motor.
