i have a 04 400ex, basically everything is stock. i was wondering if i can use the same chain if i drop a toothif the front?or would i have to bump up a tooth in the rear to match the drop in the front because of the chain length?? thanx guys.

You will b efine. I dropped to a 14 tooth front sprocket on mine. I just need to tighten up the slop a little.

If you have a built motor, wouldn't you want to use a 1 tooth bigger that stock front sprocket? This would make the gearing a hair taller, correct? I you lower the gearing, first gear will wind out too fast right?

I'm not absolutely set with the front sprocket yet. I have 14, 15, and 16t sprockets. I like to ride a lot out at Dumont Dunes, CA. The last time I was out there I used the 14t, and was pretty happy with it's climbing up the face and comp hill.
If time permitted, I swap out to the 15t when I'm riding out in the desert and doing some trail riding.
