First off you should get a pipe and jet kit if you haven't already, then look into a new high compression piston, then a drop-in cam, and you will have a very noticable power increase. For 500$ you probably can't really bore the engine to much or re-sleave.

First thing you want to do is get a full pipe, air filter, and rejet. Then look in to the drop-in cam and 416 piston.

If $500 is your limit:

First, you definetly need to invest in an aftermarket exhaust before you put in a high compression piston/cam. The stock exhaust will not perform well for you otherwise. You may also need to change your jetting once you go to an aftermarket exhaust.

Note: I know that this is in the "Powertrain" section, but my 2 cents... I highly recommend doing suspension upgrades before doing motor/exhaust work. Sorry, I just had to say it.:D
