i got a quick question for you guys who know your sleds. i want to start learning more about them because my dad wants to get one this winter if he can find a cheap one. its really cool because he isnt usually interested in stuff like this so what i want to do is get a couple sleds in mind to look for. right now i rock a 1973 john deere 440cc. this thing has no suspension but it will move. he wants to ditch it and get somethign newer so he can go riding and not have to worry about breaking down. he is looking to spend up to probly 3500. anything above a 1995 maybe alittle older should be good. what are some good sleds for just average road/ trail riding no need to be highly raced....just a nice newer type sled that will move but also isnt too bad of a ride. i know theres so many different kinds but im just trying to look at some certain ones..thanks alot guys

$3500 you could get a very nice sled, id say a 2001+ skidoo. Check out cycletrader to get an idea on prices. we got my 03 skidoo rev mxz 600 h.o. for 4700 with 85 miles. and a 02 skidoo mxz 700 for around the same price with 0 miles. Trust me and go with Ski doo, youll thank me ;)

Oh man!

if you lived near me i would buy that john deer, we used to own a 340 liquid fire, it was awsome! and we want another one !! lol

12-08-2003, 08:56 PM
For 3500 you can get an awesome sled for very cheap. Becuz the snow has been crap these past few years and people think it will be for a while.. but not this year:devil: My cuzin just sold his nice conditioned 95 xcr 600 for 900$ if that gives you an idea of what you could get for 3500?;) :macho

yea, we sold our 97 ski doo mxz 440 fan with about 4,000 miles for $900 to my cousin, is in really good shape and runs like a champ.

I bought an '01 Polaris 800 XCSP this summer for $3300 with low, low miles in excellent condition. You can get a very decent sled for $3500. Light years ahead of that old brick John Deere.

I bought a '97 Polaris XLT RMK for $2,000. After one hard winter and summer, I sold her for $1,100:p I wish I would have found the 400 a little sooner, and I would have never bought that piece of junk...great sled, suprised that it lasted through all of the gravel it saw, but it was still a piece. Never buy another one;)

Look around www.snowmobileauction.com at the price reports, and you can get an idea about how cheap some sleds go.

I'd go with like an 00 or 01 mxz, or if you want a Cat, get a ZR. I hear they are decent sleds.

RIDE GREEN! I have ridden Arctic Cats since I was 8 years old! They always have the highest hp and the most suspension travel. Sometimes the new models have a few bugs that need worked out but they are super easy to work on. Go with a ZR. You won't be disappointed :D .

I would get an 00 or later skidoo, 600 or 700

Or a yamaha 700 tripple again 00 or later. An xc700 polaris would also make a nice slead.

You can get a good slead for that amount of money.

I wouldn't buy anything with more then 2,000 miles on it. 4,000 is rebuild and replace time. On most liquid cooled sleads anyway.

All i have to say is ski-doo, 99 or newer mxz would be ur best bet, and reliability is awesome easy to work on. No matter what u get run a good oil, probably a synthetic like amsoil along with premium fuel at the minimum. Every rebuild i've had to do for someone was because they were running old fuel or regular, or they didn't clean their carbs at the beginning of the season thats all i can think of rite now but good luck.

If it's not yellow it's nothing!!! Get a newer MXZ, they're great trail sleds. I've got a 97'583 setup for snocross, couldnt ask for anything better right now, unless it was a new 600H.O witht he Rev platform.

RXL - XLT

RXL has 12" Suspension has an EFI - you have to get used to the EFI or you'll foul plugs. the XLT is carbeurated - this thing can MOVE - also has the 12" Suspension, both are good looking sleds (95+)

Artic CRAP, haha from what i've seen reliability sux, and they r slowww. we have 2 mxz 600s that beat polaris xc 800s w/ pipes and reeds, and we've beat some zr 800s and this is on bone stock doo 600s. I have a beater 89 mz 470 that i can beat zr 600 and 700s on, only b/c my fam used to race the old school skidoos, so its got a lil stuff done to it, but it also has over 10,000 miles on i think, all i have to say is ski doo

Dude your so full of shlt. I cant belive some people on here:rolleyes: I have been aroudn snowmobiles my WHOLE life. and right now lets just say i dont like any brand better then the other. A bone stock mxz600 would get its *** handed to it by a zr800. How do i know? Becuz i have seen an MXZ800 get its *** handed to it by a zr800. Actually they have quite alot more horsepower in their F7s and 6s then other brands. I JUST CANT TAKE PEOPLE THAT DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE SAYING. I also say the xc800 with pipes and stuff that lost to your 600 is SHlT. Altho i will admit the xc800 is a slow snowmobile, i know a guy with one and it sucks! it would not lose to a skidoo 600 stock.

Hey you live in Fon Dulac>....... I live in menominee, michigan.. Maybe we should ride sometime, and you can prove to me how fast your sleds are:eek2: :p :D I will take the ol thundercat1000 out for a ride and see how you keep up while im chillin at quarter throttle

Want me to prove it????? maybe if we actually get snow this year ill vid it it was 2 identicle mxz "600s" vs 2 polaris 800s and there were at least 5 ppl that seen it, and my 470 well ya its not stock

dude i dont need no video. If arctic cats are so slow come up here and we will do some racing. Did your two identical snowmobiles have studs on glare ice and the 800s not have them or what? Becuz they wouldnt lose to you. And my thundercat, well, lets just say you might want to just want to leave your sleds on the trailer:D

ok the deal is the 600s are actually 700s, the stickers on the hood say 600 but, they are 700s and it says it on the tunnel, but all the sleds were unstudded in snowthe 700s pulled a liitle more than a length on the polaris's. I ride a Mach 1 but i wouldn't even bother unless i would do some more stuff to it, i will give u THURDER CATs are fast, what have u topped at?

Niccccceeee, one of my bro friends had the mach im ridin before me, and he had er up to 130 i guess, on of my friends dad had one that did the same. I would guess u can do at least that if not im sure u can get there faster, granted ur studded. I mite be makin it up to around there somewhere this year.

Yeah, when you get up to those speeds thats real dangerous tho.. I did it on the river and it was on a padded down trail and only one slight turn. It was pretty crazy. I wouldnt mind seeing how fast she tops out at. Its got 172 woodys studs, clutch kit.. When everythings right, you better hold on.

Mach zs are nice sleds. i was going to trade my dirtbike for one last year but i decided to keep the bike for another year and it blew up!

NICCEEEE, i've got 192 studs, if i can afford it after i get the feel for the sled, i wanna get some v force reeds, k&n filters w/ snowchargers, different clutches, and last thing i would do is pipes cuz i don't want to get in touble w/ the dnr, hmmm speed

A vmax 500 would never hit 105 on the radar unless it was going down a giant icy hill. But yest your thunder cat is very fast. I just didin't like the weight and balance feel of them. They feel like they want to push going around turns, even with 6in carbides.

I'm not sure what it would do on a radar, but most sleads speedos are off by more then you would think, especially after 80mph. I haven't rode any of the newer arctic cats, but I hated how the old ones rode. A zrt or a thunder cat has alot of build up potential (black majic porting big bore kits ect) and would make a good drag/lake racer.

People with fan cooled snowmobiles that think they go over 90 make me laugh.

For trail riding, my vote goes to a polaris or a 99 or later skidoo, along with the yami 700's.
