ok my birthday is comming up in a few months and I was thinkin about getting a 440 kit for my 400EX. I was wondering how much they cost, I think I saw one in the dirt wheels mag for 212 that seems pretty cheep. and if I do get it what mods would I have to do to my bike, like would I have to get that quicksilver carb or w/e? please help.

gopeddin400ex- You do not have to use a different carb with a 440 kit and you can get very good performance with the stock carb if it is jetted properly. We ride with another 440 that is built identical to my wifes except that he runs a fcr carb and the difference in power and torque is not as much as you might think. If you use a good midrange cam with the 440 bore along with your pipe and air filter you should have a very strong runner with out the different carb.We went with a compression ratio of 11:1 and it is working very well for us and we mix one gallon of 110 octane"race" fuel with 4 gallons of 92 premium pump gas and it makes a big difference.I found through trial and error and with some help from this forum that proper jetting will make all the difference in how it performs.

You should not use a timing key (degree key) in a 440 kit it will create too much heat.
I agree a 440 kit and a cam along with exhaust and a highflow air filter will make a good combination. most of the 440kits will need to be mixed with a little bit of race gas due to the compression ratio.

thanks for all that good information, but would av gas work the same way as race fuel and premium gas? and another thing will my 440 kit work with the stock cam till I get some more money to buy a cam?

Heres a tip. When ordering a 440 kit, keep in mind a true 440 piston is 89.5mm. I bought a 440 kit off of EBay and it turned out to be a kit with an 89mm piston...which equals to a 435.

Good luck!!:D
