I'm thinking about running 25 inch tall all traks to help my quad with ground clearence and deeply rutted trails. What kind sprockets should i get or is it even possible to lower the final drive gear ratio enough to have stock power with those big meats. Also what should i run for a front tire?

those are huge...just buy some 22"s & a skidplate. ;)

My brother has 25 inch Gators on his 250x which is piped and has bigger jets with one tooth less on the front and a tooth more on the back and can hold a wheelie forever in second. The Gators have the best grip and he can go through pretty much anything, even that deep thick black mud you find in the woods. I'm sure you'll won't have a noticeable power loss with 25" all traks on a 400ex if my brother notices just a little difference in the low-end with a lightly modded 250x. You'd be probably be topping out at around 75mph on a 400ex with 25 inchers you think?

Ive got 22 inch sur traks and the best ground clearence skidplate i could find. I'm going with studded all-traks no matter what. But the jury is still out on what size. Today I found a 23.5 inch front tire. The trails I have to ride on are rutted rooted clay. Usually there is a 2 foot deep rut and a 1 foot deep rut. The 2 footer is from motorcyles.(i may be exagerating the average depth some but i think you get the point) I think the 25's might help out.

Tires those big will probably make you rub and have clearance issues on you quad and not the ground. If there is some major rutts maybe u need to find a better place to ride:blah:

85.64mph

putting 25's on a 400ex is 5" difference than stock. doesnt a 250x have 22's stock? that would be only 3" difference and he had a gear change. id say at the least you would want to drop to a 14 tooth front sprocket

Props are in order for the guy that posted the calculator link. thanks man!. According to that to match the final drive ratio I want I would have to run a 13/40 sprocket combo. Are they available? Whats the tallest front tire you can get that isnt too wide?

how much bottom end and acceleration would i lose if i ran 16/30 gearing on my 400ex?

crazy casey used to have 25 inchers on his warrior. don't do it. its waaaay too big and looks goofy. just run 22's. thats what the cross country guys run. or else just get a utility

Run 22's. I dont know about what these guys are sayin about you wont loose much power but its BS. Your 400ex will be the slowest in the area. Even with 22's my buddy YZROOSTINYA has a little less snap to it and top end will suffer because bigger tires slow you down. Trust me i got a lifted truck and i know about this. The bigger tires will make you bog more at high rpms so you will prettymuch stay the same in top speed, possibly a little edge. Run 22's and a PRM skidplate and youll be fine.

22's are a huge differance over stock. I like the ground clearance as I need it where i ride but I wish I could run 20's so much less rotating mass.

if you went to 25's you would HAVE to change you gearing.

Here's my brother's 250x, probably seen this pic before, it now has fast trekkers on the front, put stock rears back on in summer or when its dry

yeah, but 250x has 15hp, this one maybe closer to 20 and 400ex has 27 or something around there so I don't think you would need to change gearing

That test should have been done a about 6000 rpm because without a gear change thats all ur gunna get outta 5th gear.

exactly....hey guys dont shoot the messenger, i just have that link bookmarked to solve disputes and prove to people that they cannot go 80mph with shock gearing, no matter how fast they think they are going

id say go to 22's and drop a tooth on the front, it will get you back halfway close to stock and you'll get an extra inch

when i purchased aftermarket tires, i went with the factory sizes, but one inch wider. with these tires being aftermarket and stiffer, they sit a little taller. however, i lost a decent amout of top speed. i guess it is because of the extra weight i am packing. well, i don't think its me packing the extra weight, but the quad. :D
