D23 (MN) has largely wooded tracks (many places very tight), but some open areas. What do you XC guys think?

I am not a XC guy , but I strongly suggest a stage 1 for your type of riding.

either stage 1 or xr400 cam works good too

are you happy with your 416 kit? who makes it and how much? have you had any problems with it and where do you see the biggest increase the bottom mid or top end?

Seems more low-mid. Its a JE 10.8:1 piston. You can get them anywhere (i got a deal on mine, remember you'll have to bring in your cylinder to be bored out about $50) Probably $120-140 for the piston kit. No problems, but only raced about 5 hrs and trail ridden about 3hrs on it total so far. I like it.
