I have a new 400 EX, I don't want to heavily modify it since everything is brand new and I want to keep it reliable (ie runs evertyime i push the start)!.

I currently have a big gun exhause, K & N air filter and outer wear, and rejetted. I am thinking about changing to a 14 Tooth sprocket and 6 deg ignition key. Is this a good idea, has anyone else modded their 400 similar to this?

Thanks

Tim

i have a 14t front sprocket with a Big Gun slip-on and i love it, just keep in mind you will lose a lot of top end, but you will be able to wheelie like nothing else:cool:

also when you advance the timing 6 degrees, remember that it's going to be running a bit hotter...

im thinking that it will only run hotter if you run it with a high compression piston. i did not notice it running hotter after installing the 6deg key. and i still have it in with 11:1 comp and i dont have any problems, but i now have an aux. oil cooler

look thru this search for more info on the key

look thru this search for more info on the gear..you will lose top end, so it depends on how you ride and where you ride

by just installing the key, sparks claims it will run a little hotter. its probally not that noticable though. however, the key won't give tons of power. i think it makes the throttle response more crisp. with the 14 tooth sprocket, you will lose speed in the upper gears. if you like all lowend for tight trails or terrain, it will be fine. if you like the speed of the upper gears, you might not like it too much.

with a 6 degree advance it will run hotter because the spark is igniting sooner, but it probably won't be something you would notice very much. just make sure to have the right oil, the right amount, and make sure your jetting is correct so you won't have a problem.

I got my quad back Saturday with now sprocket and key. I do mostly trail riding and it deginitely helped. I was mostly concerned about more ooomph coming out of turns and doing hills. Got just what I wanted... Very Pleased...
