header pipe glowing!!!!

Just install a 40 pilot jet my new 03 400ex to get the thing to start. warmed her up to go for a ride and looked down and my header was glowing. starts to glow at 1/4 throttle sitting in netural. everything is stock down to the air filter. I thought a 40 jet is going richer not leaner. please help shed some light on this.

go down on your main jet cus that will make you not run as lean. your pilot wont matter as much.

It doesn't matter what your jetting is. If you just sit there and rev it up it will get hot and start glowing that is just what metal do.

Yep, If your just sitting and keeping the revs up... the head pipe will glow red.:)

so what do i need to do to make the thing start better?

check all ur exhaust bolts to make sure there tight.you might have an exhaust leak that could be causing it.

if your pilot jet is clogged or too lean, your headers will glow red when its just at an idle or slightly above. i would clean the carb out if you think your jetting is right on. otherwise like ABC said, check for leaks.

my brothers old ttr 125 had full big gun exhaust and his headers glowed at night when it got hot and the only pronlems he had were carb problems and i dont think that would be it....

if it is cold outside, try moving your clip on your needle to the 4th position. if the headers glow at idle, turn the fuel skrew on the bottom of the carb out a little. if it glows from 1/8 to 3/4 throttle, move the clip on the needle like i previously stated.

by the way, a larger pilot jet will richen up the air/fuel mixture.

my guess is the bike is running lean.if it's at an idle poss pilot if its with throttle i would think its the main.go bigger or raise needle by lowering clip on needle.how does the plug look
