I have a 2004 400EX, and just ordered a new swingarm +6. Does anyone know what length chain is stock, and what length I will need to fit. Can I buy 2 chains that are 100 links each, and connect together, to get what I need in length? Are chains connectable? Any ideas or formulas for this? Is there a for****a to guess the size need, and then order that size. Any ideas out there to help me out?

stock is just under a hundred i think so i would buy two 100 link chains, a chain breaker and a few master links. Link the two together to form 201 link chain and test fit it, find out the length and use the chain breaker to shorten the chain and then connect it using another master link.

hope this helps

when i ordered a chain from sidewinder, i said i didnt know how many links i needed b/c of my extended swingarm. the guy said "well, i'll make sure you get plenty". ended up cutting about 5 links off.

THANK YOU!!!!!! I assumed I could connect two together, but Ii was not sure. Thanks for your help... I ordered the swingarm, and am waiting on the chroming to be done, and the people I ordered it from, have not responded as to sizing, and I would like to get it ordered, so I have it ready to install, instead of waiting another week. I am thinking about going with the DID Gold, X-ring...???

I have a plus 4" and needed 107 links to make it with 16/38 gearing. You have some play here and there just dont cut it too short. I would get a 130 links and cut off what was excess. Stock is 92 links..

Just mesure 12 inch of chain and count how many licks there are and add it the the number of licks you have now.

the 12 inches are for 6 on top and 6 on bottom.

I bought a plus 6 for looks. I had it chromed etc... I am not into dragging, or anything other than riding. It just looks cool, along with the rest of my 400 ex... When I have it complete, within next month, I will post pic. You will then see why.

If you don't drag the bike is going to handle like sh*t with a +6

so how many inches can you increase the swingarm before you start to lose
performance and handling????

If you have a highly modified, powerful motor, the front end lifts up as soon as you hit the gas. You can't even use all your power because you can't keep your front wheels on the ground. This is obviously really important, since a good start is critical in a drag race. The solution is an extended swingarm.

By extending the swingarm, you put more weight on the front of your quad. Now, you can put more power to the ground without lifting your front wheels.

If your motor isn't making at least 70HP, then you don't need a 6" extended swingarm.

And, unfortunately, you run into the same problem that "ricers" have. If your quad LOOKS fast, and IS fast, then you are cool. However, if your quad LOOKS fast, but is actually slow, then you're just going to look like a dork.

Waste of money.
Why spend $500-1000 to make your quad handle like **** just for looks?

i agree that you dont need a +6 swingarm for looks if you arent dragging but that wasnt my question. my question was at what point in inches do you get the most usable horsepower to the ground with out loosing performance and handling ability?:confused2

A +2 is about the limit...

There is no "magic" number, it all depends on your setup.

An extended swingarm will keep your front end from lifting, but you lose traction off the line. The proper "length" depends on your compromise between power and traction. If you have 50Hp, then you can probably keep your front wheels down with a +2, any longer than that and you are just losing traction and handling. However, if you're running and impressive 75HP, then a +2 isn't going to cut it, you'll need to go longer.

This applies mainly to drag racing. For normal riding, I think +1 1/4 is best, and I wouldn't go any longer than +2.

What other mods are you planning on doing to this quad?

If you are just dragging then a +4 would be okay, but +6:confused: When you start to go past +2 the bike starts to handle like a 3 wheeler. I have a +4 and it 2 wheels in corners very bad. I broke it last weekend so its all good now:blah:
